Effect of cholinesterase on the chemiluminescence of luminol

Summary The chemiluminescent oxidation of luminol was activated by cholinesterase. Physostigmine and dimethoate inhibited the luminescence, TEA had no effect. These results indicate that the esteratic site is responsible for the activating action of the enzyme.     

Quantitative aspects of structural changes in chorioallantoic placenta of the rat during its development

Summary Volume analysis of chorioallantoic placenta of the rat from day 12 through day 22 of fetal development shows quantitatively the changes in volume density of fetal and maternal parts, and changes of volume fractions of structural components along with the increase of absolute volume of the placenta.This work was supported by a grant of the Republic Research fund of Croatia No. 18-04-06/19-1977.     

Chromosome complement of the European Wild Pig (Sus scrofa L.)

Résumé Le complément chromosomique des sangliers des régions de l'Est et du Sud de la Yougoslavie est caractérisé par un nombre diploïde 2n=38 et il est composé de 6 paires d'autosomes acrocentriques et de 12 paires d'autosomes méta- et submétacentriques, ce qui signifie qu'il est identique au complément du porc domestique et qu'il diffère du complément chromosomique des sangliers d'Allemagne. Il est évident qu'il s'agit là d'un cas de polymorphisme chromosomique intraspécifique avec au moins deux types de nombre diploïde (2n=36 et 2n=38) résultant des variations de Robertson. Il est très probable que le porc domestique tire son origine d'un type à 38 chromosomes.     

Reflection signature of seismic and aseismic slip on the northern Cascadia subduction interface

At the northern Cascadia margin, the Juan de Fuca plate is underthrusting North America at about 45 mm x yr(-1) (ref. 1), resulting in the potential for destructive great earthquakes. The downdip extent of coupling between the two plates is difficult to determine because the most recent such earthquake (thought to have been in 1700) occurred before instrumental recording. Thermal and deformation studies indicate that, off southern Vancouver Island, the interplate interface is presently fully locked for a distance of approximately 60 km downdip from the deformation front. Great thrust earthquakes on this section of the interface (with magnitudes of up to 9) have been estimated to occur at an average interval of about 590 yr (ref. 3). Further downdip there is a transition from fully locked behaviour to aseismic sliding (where high temperatures allow ductile deformation), with the deep aseismic zone exhibiting slow-slip thrust events. Here we show that there is a change in the reflection character on seismic images from a thin sharp reflection where the subduction thrust is inferred to be locked, to a broad reflection band at greater depth where aseismic slip is thought to be occurring. This change in reflection character may provide a new technique to map the landward extent of rupture in great earthquakes and improve the characterization of seismic hazards in subduction zones.     

Effect of adrenalectomy and diet on the activity ofβ-galactosidase in the small intestine during the postnatal development of the rat

Zusammenfassung Die-Galaktosidaseaktivität im Rattendünndarm nimmt nachgeburtlich zwischen dem 15. und 20. Tag ab. Wird am 15. Tag adrenalektomiert oder wird Laktosediät verabreicht, so erhöht sich die-Galaktosidaseaktivität am 19. Tag um den mehrfachen Betrag als bei den Kontrollratten.     

Selective effect of noradrenaline on superoxide dismutase activity in the brown adipose tissue and liver of the rat

Summary Noradrenaline treatment results in a significant increase of superoxide dismutase activity in the intrascapular brown adipose tissue but not in the liver.     

Catalepsy produced by intraventricular injection of nicotine

Résumé La nicotine, aux doses de 1.0 à 4.0 mg, injectée par voie intraventriculaire à des chats non-anesthésiés, provoque la catalepsie, la sédation et la stupeur. Les signes de catalepsie apparaissent d'ordinaire 10 min après l'injection et disparaissent au bout de 40 min. L'application intraventriculaire de tétra-éthyl-ammonium potentialise les symptômes de catalepsie dûs à la nicotine.
