Here we discussed rapid response of the cave temperature and vegetation to the four Dansgaard-Oeschger cold and warm cycles
during 50-40 kaBP based on results of oxygen and carbon stable isotopic compositions from a stalagmite in Tangshan, Nanjing.
It is found that the amount of C3 vegetation relative to C4-type declines during the D-O warm events, indicating the decrease of the effective meteoric precipitation. Compared with
O-isotope records of the Greenland ice core, the stalagmite record displays a very similar pattern to Greenland ice core record
over the decade-century time scale, suggesting that the changes of the East Asian monsoon climate are in accordance with the
high-latitude polar climate in the short-term time scale. The age of the ice-rafted H5 event in the stalagmite record, however,
preceded that of Greenland ice cores by 2 ka. This out of phase between the remote areas cannot be yet proven because the

Recent theory on sexual selection suggests that females in species without paternal care choose mates by their secondary sexual characters because these indicate genotypic quality which will be transmitted to the offspring. These ideas are not yet empirically supported as data quantifying the relationship between female mate choice and female reproductive success are lacking. Only in one case, in Colias butterflies, has it been demonstrated unequivocally that females choose 'good genotypes' as mates and there is only one study, on Drosophila, demonstrating that mate choice increases one component of offspring fitness. Spur length of male pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) correlates with various fitness-related properties. We here present the first experimental field data showing that female pheasants select mates on the basis of male spur length and that female mate choice correlates with female reproductive success. 相似文献

The diversification of the repertoire of T-cell antigen receptor (TCR) specificities is influenced by at least two selection processes which occur in the thymus. One of these, termed 'negative selection', is required to install a state of tolerance to self-antigens in the T-cell repertoire and is often achieved by clonal deletion. The second type of selection operating in the thymus results in preferential differentiation of T cells that have restriction specificity for thymic major histocompatibility complex glycoproteins, but the mechanisms leading to this selective process are not yet clear. One model used to describe this 'positive selection' proposes that only those T cells with sufficient avidity for the MHC glycoproteins expressed in the thymus are allowed to acquire functional competence. Here we directly investigate the generation of TCR specificities by following the fate of developing V beta 17+ CD4-CD8+ T cells under conditions where one of the main class I-MHC molecules, either H-2K or H-2D, was specifically blocked by in vitro monoclonal antibody treatment. The results show that development of V beta 17+ CD4-CD8+ T cells in the SJL H-2s mouse strain is selectively abrogated by blocking class I-Ks molecules but is unaffected by blocking class I-Ds molecules. These data directly demonstrate that generation of CD4-CD8+ T cells expressing a particular TCR V beta segment can be correlated with the expression of a particular class I-MHC molecule, thereby providing evidence for positive selection. 相似文献

The complete amino-acid sequence of the cyclic GMP-gated channel from bovine retinal rod photoreceptors, deduced by cloning and sequencing its complementary DNA, shows that the protein contains several putative transmembrane segments, followed by a region that is similar to the cyclic GMP-binding domains of cyclic GMP-dependent protein kinase. The findings discussed in this paper mainly derived from studies on salivary glands, serving as model organs, indicate that the capacity to form the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, as judged by the activity of choline acetyltransferase, is influenced by the traffic of nerve impulses, as a long term effect. In the glands, choline acetyltransferase seems to be exclusively localized to the cholinergic nerves. In the postganglionic parasympathetic nerves of the glands, the activity of choline acetyltransferase decreases when the flow of secretory impulses in these nerves is abolished or reduced either by isolating the nerves from the central nervous system, surgically or pharmacologically, or by diminishing the reflex activation of the glands from the mouth. The opposite occurs when the reflex activation of the salivary glands is enhanced, i.e. the activity of choline acetyltransferase increases. Observations on various other organs are quoted in support of the view that the traffic of nerve impulses is of importance for the activity of the enzyme. An increase in choline acetyltransferase activity also occurs in some salivary glands after sympathetic denervation. This puzzling observation is discussed in relation to impulse traffic. Increased nerve impulse traffic and collateral sprouting seem to be responsible for the rapid restitution of choline acetyltransferase activity from a low level in an organ partially deprived of its cholinergic nerve supply. 相似文献

Considering the growth of tumor cells modeled by an enzyme dynamic process under an immune surveillance, we studied in anti-tumor immunotherapy the single-variable growth dynamics of tumor cells subject to a multiplicative noise and an external therapy intervention simultaneously. The law of tumor growth of the above anti-tumor immunotherapy model was revealed through numerical simula- tions to the relevant stochastic dynamic differential equation. Two simulative parameters of therapy, i.e., therapy intensity and therapy duty-cycle, were introduced to characterize a treatment process similar to a tumor clinic therapy. There exists a critical therapy boundary which, in an expo- nent-decaying form, divides the parameter region of therapy into an invalid and a valid treatment zone, respectively. A greater critical therapy duty-cycle is necessary to achieve a valid treatment for a lower therapy intensity while the critical therapy intensity decreases accordingly with an enhancing immunity. A primary clinic observation of the patients with the typical non-hodgekin’s lymphoma was carried out, and there appears a basic agreement between clinic observations and dynamic simulations. 相似文献
