Mechanism of urea nitrogen binding by proposed oxidized starch gastrointestinal absorbents.

By use of 14-C label it was demonstrated that apparent binding of urea N to polyaldehyde starch was probably preceeded by hydrolysis to ammonium ion. Thus direct urea binding was not the mechanism through which ingested polyaldehyde starch might increase fecal N excretion in uremic patients.     

Lane-Emden equation (LEE) of index 5 and Padé approximations

Summary The approximate analytical solution of Lane-Emden equation of index 5 has been found in the form of the rational function. The problem of the accuracy of this solution is briefly discussed.     

Irradiation of the head by 60Co opens the blood-brain barrier for drugs in rats

The passage of 6 model drugs; acetylsalicylic acid, chloramphenicol, ethimizol, carbisocaine, heptacaine, and diazepam, through the blood-brain barrier, was determined in unirradiated control rats and in animals 1, 3, and 7 days after irradiation of the head only with a dose of 25 Gy from a 60Co source. The brain uptake index (BUI), which compares the uptake of the test substance with that of 3H2O 5 s after their injection into the common carotid artery, was significantly increased in comparison with unirradiated controls 7 days after irradiation, for all substances tested except for ethimizol. For acetylsalicylic acid and chloramphenicol it was also significantly increased in the other time intervals. The less lipophilic substances showed a greater relative increase of BUI than the more lipophilic ones.     

Mendelian recessive ratios in acute poststreptococcal glomerulonephritis

Summary A prospective study of 15 families (61 siblings) of index cases of acute poststreptococcal glomerulonephritis detected a proportion of 0.260±0.016 SEM. This is an excellent fit for a single autosomal recessive trait.This study was supported by CONICIT grants SAL-S1-001 and 3126-S1-0663 (Venezuela) and Grants in Aid from CONDES (Universidad del Zulia) and Asociacion de Amigos del Riñón (Maracaibo).     

Inhibition of vaccinia virus multiplication by 2-carboxymethylmercapto-4-amino-5-(p-chlorphenyl)-pyrimidine

Zusammenfassung Mit der Methode der Hemmung der Plaquebildung bei gleichzeitiger Diffusion der antiviralen Stoffe durch den Agar wurde eine hohe Selektivität des 2-Carboxymethylmercapto-4-amino-5(p-chlorphenyl)-pyrimidins für die Hemmung des Vaccinevirus festgestellt. Das Verhältnis der toxischen und der virushemmenden Konzentrationen wurde in den Membrankulturen = 15 gefunden. Die Substanz war gegen andere Viren (NDV, WEE) unwirksam.
