Response of briefly glycerinated smooth muscle to Ca2+ and Mg2+

Summary Smooth muscle, treated with 50% glycerol solution at 27°C for 20 min, contracted on the application of Ca²⁺ or Mg²⁺. The briefly glycerinated smooth muscle can be used as a model system of smooth muscle contraction.     

Hemolysis in immune rabbits of autologous erythrocytes modified with common enterobacterial antigen

Zusammenfassung In Kaninchen, die mit gemeinsamem Antigen der intestinalen Bakterien immunisiert waren, sowie in nichtimmunisierte Kaninchen wurden Eigenerythrocyten, die mit dem Antigen vorbehandelt waren, intravenös injiziert.In vivo-Hämolyse-wurde nur bei den immunisiertem Tieren beobachtet. Erythrocyten, die mit heterologem Staphylokokken-Antigen vorbehandelt waren, wurden nicht hämolysiert.     

Specific reaction of aloe extract with serum proteins of various animals

Summary We found that aloe extract contains a lectin-like substance which reacts with serum proteins of various animals. Furthermore, in human serum 2 proteins,a ₂-macroglobulin anda ₁-antitrypsin, were shown to be reactive with aloe extract.     

Occurrence of mitochondrial monoamine oxidase in human semen.

Mitochondrial monoamine oxidase (MAO) was found in human semen, showing its Km and Vmax values of 91.7 microM and 290 pmoles/mg of protein/60 min, respectively, with kynuramine as substrate. A major part of the activity was due to type A MAO.     

Formation of lipoperoxide in brain edema induced by cold injury

Zusammenfassung Biochemische Untersuchung zur Frage der Membranschädigung bei experimentellem Hirnödem: Lipoperoxid tritt 12 h nach der Traumatisierung in der höchsten Konzentration auf, was pathogenetisch bedeutungsvoll sein könnte.     

Oxidation of synephrine by type A and type B monoamine oxidase.

Synephrine (SP) was found to be a substrate for monoamine oxidase (MAO) in rat brain mitochondria, showing the Km and Vmax values of 250 microM and 32.6 nmoles/mg of protein/30 min respectively. The inhibition studies showed that the SP oxidation was carried out by both type A and type B MAO and a major part of the activity was due to type A MAO.
