Cicuta bulbifera L. (Umbelliferae) in Alaska

Cited are distribution records for Alaska of Cicuta bulbifera L. It was discovered growing in the Nowitna National Wildlife Refuge in north central Alaska in 1984 and again in 1987. An earlier record is also known from near Fairbanks.     

Canyon grassland vegetation changes following fire in northern Idaho

Native and nonnative vegetation mosaics are common in western rangelands. If land managers could better predict changes in the abundance of native and nonnative species following disturbances, maintenance of native plant cover and diversity may be improved. In August 2000, during suppression of a wildfire near Lewiston, Idaho, a backing fire burned canyon grassland plots. A previous study had recorded species composition and cover prior to the fire, so we were able to evaluate changes in species composition and abundance on established plots before and after the fire. Overall, summer burning had little effect on the grassland communities. Pseudoroegneria spicata recovered to prefire coverage by the third postfire year. In the third postfire year, cover of native and nonnative annual species was significantly greater on burned than unburned sites ( P Bromus tectorum cover increased, as expected, on burned plots. Prefire and postfire cover values for Centaurea solstitialis were nearly equal, and there were no significant cover differences between burned and unburned plots in any year. As part of this study, we also evaluated changes in the cover of dominant native and nonnative species with respect to their prefire seral stage on burned and unburned plots. Because our sample sizes were small, we only report community-level trends but suggest that this type of community analysis could make for an interesting future study. Si los administradores de tierras pudieran predecir mejor los cambios en la abundancia de especies nativas y no nativas después de las perturbaciones, se podría mejorar el mantenimiento de la cobertura y diversidad de las plantas nativas. En agosto de 2000, los remanentes de un incendio quemaron terrenos de pradera de cañón durante la supresión de un incendio cerca de Lewiston, Idaho. Un estudio previo registró la composición y cobertura de especies antes del incendio, por lo que pudimos evaluar los cambios en la composición y abundancia de especies en determinados terrenos antes y después del incendio. En general, las quemas de verano no afectaron mucho a las comunidades de pradera. Para el tercer año después del incendio, Pseudoroegneria spicata se había repuesto al nivel de cobertura que tuvo antes del incendio y la cobertura de especies anuales nativas y no nativas fue significativamente mayor ( P Bromus tectorum aumentó en los terrenos quemados. Debido a que tuvimos un reducido tamaño de muestra, sólo reportamos tendencias a nivel de comunidad, pero sugerimos que esta clase de análisis de comunidades podrían servir como modelo para estudios interesantes en el futuro.     

Using the bootstrap to evaluate forecasting equations

The bootstrap, like the jack-knife, is a technique for estimating standard errors. The idea is to use Monte Carlo simulation, based on a non-parametric estimate of the underlying error distribution. The bootstrap will be applied to an econometric equation describing the demand for energy by industry, to determine multi-period forecasting error and choose among competing specifications. The delta method for estimating forecast errors turns out to be too optimistic by a factor of 2.     

The Advantages of Obscurity: Charles Darwin's Negative Inference from the Histories of Domestic Breeds

In The Origin of Species, Charles Darwin famously accounted for the lack of fossil evidence in support of species evolution on the grounds that the fossil record is naturally incomplete. This essay examines a similar argument that Darwin applied to his analogy between natural and artificial selection: the scarcity of data about the historical backgrounds of domestic breeds was the natural by-product of an extremely gradual change process. The point was to enhance the ability of the artificial selection analogy to suggest that nature's species had undergone a similar transformation. Darwin did not depend on this negative inference alone, however, for in his writings he included whatever information he could find about the actual histories of particular breeds. A comparison with Darwin's treatment of the fossil record suggests the reasonableness of this combined use of opposite kinds of evidence to establish a single point. The comparison also suggests the unique qualities of negative inference as applied to the breeding analogy.     

The unique features of follicular T cell subsets

The germinal center (GC) reaction is critical for humoral immunity, but also contributes adversely to a variety of autoimmune diseases. While the major protective function of GCs is mediated by plasma cells and memory B cells, follicular helper T (TFH) cells represent a specialized T cell subset that provides essential help to the antigen-specific B cells in the form of membrane-bound ligands and secreted factors such as IL-21. Recent studies have revealed that TFH cells are capable of considerable functional diversity as well as possessing the ability to form memory cells. The molecular basis of this plasticity and heterogeneity is only now emerging. It has also become apparent that several other populations of follicular T cells exist, including natural killer T cells and regulatory T cells. In this review we will discuss the function of follicular T cells and interaction of these populations within the GC response.     

Assortative mating in insects: sexual selection vs. sampling artifact

In this report we analyze patterns of size-assortative mating in an insect genus by (1) describing the consistency and strength of assortative mating among populations of a species and among species of a genus, and (2) determining the role of sampling artifacts in generating this nonrandom pattern of mating. Our data consist of 18 samples of soldier beetles (8 species of the genus Chauliognathus ) from 17 sites within the southwestern United States. Of the 18 samples, just 6 exhibited significant correlations between elytron lengths of mating pairs. We show how these and other significant correlations are generated by 3 kinds of sampling artifacts: mixed-species samples, mixed-population samples, and mixed-microsite samples.     

New American bark beetles (Coleoptera: Scolytidae), with two recently introduced species

Species named as new to science include: Conophthorus michoacanae, C. teocotum, Hylesinus aztecus (Mexico), Phloeocleptus punctatus (Costa Rica), Pseudothysanoes atomus (Venezuela), P. leechi (California), Pityogenes mexicanus, Araptus speciosus, Amphicranus spectus (Mexico), and Xyleborus praestans (Panama). Also reported are the first records of the notorious Xylosandrus compactus (Eichhoff) from South America (Brazil), and the first American records of Xyleborus fornicatus Eichhoff (Panama) and X. validus Eichhoff (New York and Pennsylvania).     

Relict occurrence of three "American" Scolytidae (Coleoptera) in Asia

The first non-American representatives of the bark beetle genus Pseudopityophthorus , of the subtribe Corthylina (Corthylini), and of the Ips concinnus species group are named. All are apparently relicts of an early faunal exchange with North America. The new taxa include: Gnatharus , new genus, and its type-species Gnatharus tibetensis , new species (Tibet); Xenophthorus , new subgenus, and its type-species Pseudopityophthorus (Xenophthorus) peregrinus , new species (Tibet), and Ips orientalis , new species (Tibet, China). The intercontinental exchange of other taxa in Scolytidae are also mentioned.     

Aquatic birds of the White River, Uintah County, Utah

Abundance, seasonal use, and species composition of waterfowl and other aquatic birds are described along a 32.8 km stretch of the White River, Uintah County, Utah, at the site of the proposed White River Dam. Fourteen species of waterfowl and eight other species of aquatic birds were recorded. Waterfowl populations along the river were highest in April, but densities were much lower than on lakes and reservoirs at nearby Ouray National Wildlife Refuge.         

Interdisciplinarity: Potentials and Challenges

Interdisciplinarity, as a concept and practice, is reviewed and related to a recent article (Romm, 1998) in this journal. Authors advocating interdisciplinarity for social research and problem solving seem to have diverse, if often largely implicit, epistemological, and other assumptions informing their proposals. Romm (1998) develops and advocates a critical and reflexive orientation for tying interdisciplinarity to action research and related endeavors. For some academicians, however, interdisciplinarity appears to be considered a relatively unproblematic pursuit of merely selecting appropriate methods. Significant issues and questions concerning interdisciplinary pursuits, particularly in academic settings, exist and are briefly explored, based on the experiences and perceptions of the author. Basic structures and processes found in fields such as action research/science and management systems often seem neglected and very much needed for interdisciplinary inquiry and knowledge construction.
