Regulation of enzymes of ethanol metabolism in yeast (Rhodotorula gracilis)

Summary The three enzymes of ethanol metabolism alcohol dehydrogenase, aldehyde dehydrogenase and acetyl-CoA synthetase in the obligate aerobic yeastRhodotorula gracilis are repressed by glucose and induced by C₂ metabolic fuels with a regulatory pattern indicating a correlation in the control mechanisms. To try an identification of the molecular signals involved in the transmission of the inducing stimulus, experiments were carried out by blocking with 2 mM pyrazole the ethanol acetaldehyde metabolic step. Results indicate that ethanol is not specifically required as a molecular signal for induction.This work was supported by a grant from the Italian Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche.     

DDT: The degradation of ring-labeled14C-DDT to14CO2 in the rat

Summary Ring fission ofp, p-DDT was studied in the rat following a single oral dose of 0.74 mg/kg (1.04 Ci) of uniformly ring-labeled¹⁴C-DDT. Expired air was passed through a solution of ethanolamine-ethylene glycol monomethyl ether (12) to trap¹⁴CO₂. A total of 1.6% of the radioactivity administered was recovered in the expired air collected continually for 10 days, indicating that while degradation of the phenyl moiety is not a major route pfp, p-DDT metabolism in the rat, it is equal to the urinary excretion. Nevertheless, these results represent the most radical change accomplished in vivo of a residual insecticide yet reported in mammals.Acknowledgment. Does an inhibitor of mitochondrial adenylate kinase also affect oxidative phosphorylation?

Summary Adenylate kinase activity of intact mitochondria is strongly inhibited by Ap₅A, i.e.p ¹,p ⁵-Di (adenosine-5-) pentaphosphate, whereas oxidative phosphorylation is not affected. Therefore, Ap₅A is a useful tool to distinguish between oxidative and non oxidative ATP generating reactions.Acknowledgment. Organization of myosin molecules in the muscle thick filament

Summary Tryptic treatment of muscle thick filaments reveals the underlying backbones of aggregatedl-meromyosin as a coli of 3 secondary filaments (helical repeat 130 nm) each in turn a coli of a 3 finer ones.     

Blood plasma investigations by resonance raman spectroscopy: Detection of carotenoid pigments

Summary Using Raman spectroscopy, we demonstrate that low levels of -carotene, lycopene, and xanthophyll give rise to resonance enhanced bands in blood plasma. These results explain the significance of previously unidentified spectral maxima which have been related to the state of health of the blood donor.     

Ecdysone 20-hydroxylase from the midgut of the tobacco hornworm (Manduca sexta L.)

Summary An ecdysone 20-hydroxylase enzyme system that converts -ecdysone to 20-hydroxyecdysone was prepared from the midgut of the tobacco hornworm prepupa. This partially purified enzyme is NADPH dependent and is localized in the mitochondrial fraction of the midgut tissue.     

Effect of air ionization on blood serotonin in vitro

Summary The effect of negative and positive air ionisation on siliconized blood serotonin was studied in vitro. The experiments showed that within 10 min positive ionisation increased serotonin levels in total blood (+40%), plasma (+90%), erythrocytes (+50%) and thrombocytes (+200%). On the other hand, negative ionization (10 min) lowered the serotonin content of total blood (–30%), plasma (–42.5%), erythrocytes (–41.7%) and thrombocytes (–72.3%), thus confirming the Krueger Effect in vitro.This research was generously supported by a grant from the Joint Research Fund of the Hebrew University and Hadassah, and Dr. and Mrs.Leonard Appleby of Palmbeach, Florida.Acknowledgment: Our thanks are due to Mr.B. 嗜热乳酸杆菌T-1发酵特性的研究

对产L-乳酸的一株细菌T-1进行了营养缺陷型的初步鉴定，并对其发酵特性进行了研究?初步鉴定出蛋白胨中的某些物质是它的生长因子。培养基中加入蛋白胨后，在同样时间下比不加蛋白胨时菌体量明显增长；蛋白胨含量为15g／L时，发酵L-乳酸产量达到85．0g／L，比不加蛋白胨时的产量提高了48％；转化率为81．0％，比不加蛋白胨时的转化率提高了25％，从其发酵特性试验得出了T-1的最适发酵条件。发酵液中L乳酸的纯度为99．396。     

世界优秀男子110 m栏运动员成绩变化分析

采用文献资料调查、数理统计等科研方法, 对1997年世界田径锦标赛男子110 m栏前 7 名运动员的成绩进行相关分析, 揭示当今男子110 m栏全程速度变化的规律和特点, 并对近 4 年来世界优秀男子 110 m栏运动员与我国男子110 m栏运动员的成绩进行对比分析, 希望能对我国男子110 m栏的训练提供一些新的参考和启示.     

γ-Al2O3载体孔内原位合成水滑石

以尿素为沉淀剂,利用γ-Al2O3的内孔表面铝源原位合成水滑石. 考察了晶化时间、晶化温度、初始溶液浓度、原料配比对原位合成水滑石的影响. 实验中发现晶化6 h,MgAlCO3-LDH的晶体结构已趋于完整,晶化时间大于6 h时会有NH4Al(OH)2CO3*H2O杂相生成.在实验条件范围内,生成的一次粒子大小随着晶化时间的延长逐渐增大,随着晶化温度的升高、初始溶液浓度的增大而减小.
