Bacillus thuringiensis delta-endotoxin: evidence that toxin acts at the surface of susceptible cells

Enzymically activated delta-endotoxin of Bacillus thuringiensis covalently bound to Sephadex beads, has the same effect on insect cells in tissue culture as free toxin. The effect is prevented by antitoxin antibody and heat denaturation and is not due to a nonspecific protein effect, the beads, or toxin released from the beads. The toxin, therefore, probably acts at the cell surface.     

Diurnal variations in cholinesterase activities in the slug,Laevicaulis alte

Summary Cyclical variations in acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE) levels in foot muscle (FM) and AChE activity in central nervous system (CNS) ofLaevicaulis, during 24-h-day, were maximal at 04.00 h and minimal at 12.00 h. But BuChE activity was 180°C out of phase with AChE in CNS. The rhythmic trend of AChE in CNS might be due to true cholinesterase activity.Acknowledgements. Cross-linked arabinogalactan: A new affinity matrix for the purification ofRicinus communis lectins

Summary Arabinogalactan has been cross-linked to give a new high capacity affinity matrix for the purification ofRicinus communis lectins. It shows a capacity which is 50 times greater than that of the conventional affinity matrices.     

Prostacyclin-like activity of endothelium and subendothelium — important for atherosclerosis?

Summary Morphological control of Moncada's bioassay for prostacyclin (PG I₂) activity measurement shows that the activity depends not only on endothelium, but in important amounts on subendothelial tissue too. Therefore, it can be concluded that platelet thrombus formation after endothelial cell injury does not depend only on the PG I₂-producing ability of the tissue.     

Cadmium-113 FT NMR-spectra of rabbit liver metallothioneins

Summary Cadmium-113 FT NMR-spectra of rabbit liver metallothionein-I and-II gave 6 and 7 NMR-signals, respectively, at between 610 and 670 ppm downfield from aqueous Cd(ClO₄)₂ solution (0.1 M).We thank Mr M. Imanari (JEOL) for the NMR-data and Dr K. Kubota (NIES) for encouragement.     

Modification of the action of pentagastrin on acid secretion by botulinum toxin

Summary I.v. botulinum toxin after 60–90 min abolished the dose-response relationship between pentagastrin and gastric acid secretion in anesthetized rats and guinea-pigs. The toxin reduced but did not abolish the acid stimulatory effect of histamine. As expected, the acid response to vagal stimulation was abolished and that to methacholine in rats was unaltered by the toxin.Acknowledgment. We are grateful to the generosity of Dr Edward J.
