Inheritance and expression ofEsterase-1 allozymes inPeromyscus leucopus

Summary We analyzed inheritance of 5Es-1 alleles inP. leucopus and found them to be co-dominant and segregating from a single autosomal locus, thereby verifying assumptions of Mendelian inheritance imfield data. We also described an allele that is silent in hemolysate, but is active in liver extract.Acknowledgment. Digestive enzymes in the gut and salivary gland of the larvae ofChilo auricilius Ddgn.

Summary Amylase, - and -glucosidase, - and -galactosidase, -fructosidase, trypsin, aminotripeptidase, leucine-aminopeptidase, prolinase, prolidase glycyl-L-leucine dipeptidase and glycylglycine dipeptidase are present in the 3rd instar larvae ofChilo auricilius.Dr Kishan Singh, Indian Institute of Sugarcane Research, Lucknow, is gratefully acknowledged for providing necessary facilities.     

Down's syndrome: changes in protein fractions of blood plasma

Summary A statistically significant decrease of prealbumin and statistically significant increases of alpha₂-macroglobulin and IgA were found in blood plasma of patients with Down's syndrome using quantitative crossed immunoelectrophoresis.We are indebted to Prof. T.C. Examination of naturally occurring polyacetylenes and α-terthienyl for their ability to induce cytogenetic damage

Summary -Terthienyl and 5 polyacetylenes were examined for chromosome damaging activity using Syrian hamster cells. None of these naturally occurring compounds induced sister chromatid exchanges and neither -terthienyl nor phenylheptatriyne induced chromosome aberrations.The authors wish to thank the National Science and Engineering Research Council for financial support of this research.     

A postsynaptic α, 2-receptor: The alpha-adrenergic receptor of hamster white fat cells

Summary The effects of selected -agonists and -antagonists on theophylline-induced lipolysis were investigate in isolated hamster white fat cells ₂-Agonists (tramazoline, clonidine) inhibited theophylline-induced lipolysis while an ₂-agonist (methoxamine) was without any effect. The inhibitory effect of ₂-agonists was suppressed by yohimbine (₂-antagonist), whereas ₂-antagonists were inefficient. This result implies that the -adrenergic receptor of hamster fat cells is of the ₂-type, although located postsynaptically.Acknowledgments. A selective concentration-dependent dysrhythmogenic and antidysrhythmic action of prostaglandins E2, F2α and I2 (prostacyclin) on isolated rat hearts

Summary Prostaglandins (PGs) E₂, F₂, and I₂ were examined for their effects on the electrical and mechanical activities of isolated rat, rabbit and guinea-pig hearts. All PGs produced dysrhythmias in rat hearts at low concentrations only, while higher concentrations were antiarrhythmic. Guinea-pig hearts were less responsive while rabbit hearts were completely resistant.We thank the Manitoba Heart Foundation for financial support and Dr J. Age-related differences in the urinary excretion of prostaglandin F2α catabolites in the rat

Summary Tritium-labelled PGF₂ was administered i.v. into rats of varying ages (2, 4, 6 weeks and adult). Urine was collected and assayed for radioactive products by thin-layer-chromatography. Results showed a distinctly different urinary profile between the 2-week-old and the adult rat. While the urinary pattern from the 2-week-old rat gave a single less polar product than PGF₂, the pattern from the adult rat gave products more polar than PGF₂. Urine from the 4- and 6-week-old rats gave a mixture of these types of products. These results indicate that some prostaglandin catabolic pathway (likely the -oxidative system) is activated in vivo within the 4–6-week postnatal period in the rat.Supported by a grant (MT-4181) to C.P.-A. from the Medical Research Council of Canada.This study is in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a Ph.D. degree in the Department of Pharmacology, University of Toronto.     

Evidence for an unusual multifunctional protoreceptor in hormone action

Summary Contrary to the techniques of mere association, column chromatography has revealed a protoreceptor that accepts aldosterone agonists and antagonists only in the physiological target, the kidney, and is absent in non-targets, liver and serum; it is furthermore different from the aldosterone specific receptor in renal cytosol.Supported in part by grants from the CNRS AI 03 1917 and UER Broussais Hôtel Dieu.     

The effect of physostigmine on (Na++K+)-ATPase activity in different rat brain regions

Summary The activity of (Na⁺+K⁺)-ATPase and acetylcholine esterase were folloed in rat brain cerebral cortex, caudate, thalamus, hippocampus and medulla after i.v. administration of physostigmine. Both enzymes were found to be inhibited in a dose-dependent manner. The most pronounced inhibition of (Na⁺+K⁺)-ATPase was found in caudate. where the highest activity of acetylcholine esterase is found.These studies were supported by a grant from the Union of Science of Republic Serbia, No. 40404-14.     

Properties of the larval hemocytes ofDrosophila melanogaster

Summary Contrary to Srdi and Gloor's report, we find crystal cells (cc) in the lymph glands ofD. melanogaster larvae; the size and number of inclusions in the cc cannot be used to distinguish the 2 sibling species,D. melanogaster andD. simulans; cc in the hemocoel are not phagocytic cells; the surface properties of the lamellocytes are consistent with their derivation from plasmatocytes and not cc.Supported by grant No. CA16619 awarded by the National Cancer Institute, DHEW, USPHS.
