What Do Teachers Do? A Qualitative Analysis of the Role of the Teacher

The role of the teacher in the classroom can be seen to constitute a sociological problem. The objective of this article is to understand teaching life and to discover how teachers construct meaning of their role in the classroom. There is a scarcity of literature pertaining to the role of the teacher. The only available literature is particularly of a positivistic nature which advances number crunching. None of the research is done from the point of view of the teachers. To understand what teachers are doing in the classroom, it was necessary to undertake an investigation from the perspective of the teachers themselves. This was done within a qualitative methodological framework.     

Comparative assessment of large-scale data sets of protein-protein interactions

Comprehensive protein protein interaction maps promise to reveal many aspects of the complex regulatory network underlying cellular function. Recently, large-scale approaches have predicted many new protein interactions in yeast. To measure their accuracy and potential as well as to identify biases, strengths and weaknesses, we compare the methods with each other and with a reference set of previously reported protein interactions.     

Caenorhabditis elegans: plague bacteria biofilm blocks food intake

Bubonic plague is transmitted to mammals, including humans, by the bites of fleas whose digestive tracts are blocked by a mass of the bacterium Yersinia pestis. In these fleas, the plague-causing bacteria are surrounded by an extracellular matrix of unknown composition, and the blockage depends on a group of bacterial genes known as the hmsHFRS operon. Here we show that Y. pestis creates an hmsHFRS-dependent extracellular biofilm to inhibit feeding by the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. Our results suggest that feeding obstruction in fleas is a biofilm-mediated process and that biofilms may be a bacterial defence against predation by invertebrates.     

Generic mechanism for generating a liquid-liquid phase transition

Recent experimental results indicate that phosphorus--a single-component system--can have a high-density liquid (HDL) and a low-density liquid (LDL) phase. A first-order transition between two liquids of different densities is consistent with experimental data for a variety of materials, including single-component systems such as water, silica and carbon. Molecular dynamics simulations of very specific models for supercooled water, liquid carbon and supercooled silica predict a LDL-HDL critical point, but a coherent and general interpretation of the LDL-HDL transition is lacking. Here we show that the presence of a LDL and a HDL can be directly related to an interaction potential with an attractive part and two characteristic short-range repulsive distances. This kind of interaction is common to other single-component materials in the liquid state (in particular, liquid metals), and such potentials are often used to describe systems that exhibit a density anomaly. However, our results show that the LDL and HDL phases can occur in systems with no density anomaly. Our results therefore present an experimental challenge to uncover a liquid-liquid transition in systems like liquid metals, regardless of the presence of a density anomaly.     

Utah plant novelties in Cymopterus and Penstemon

Cymopterus higginsii and Penstemon atwoodii are named and described from materials collected in the Kaiparowits Plateau vicinity of eastern Kane County, Utah. Habitat, distribution, and probable affinities are outlined.     

A New Species of Asclepias (Asclepiadaceae) from Northwestern New Mexico

Asclepias sanjuanensis Heil, Porter, & Welsh, a new species from the pinyon-juniper woodlands of the San Juan River Valley, San Juan County, New Mexico, is described and illustratred. The species appears to be local and rare. Similar to A. ruthiae Maguire, it is distinguished by the greater number of flowers per inflorescence, the larger number of stems, and the pubescence characters.
