The Intentionality of Formal Systems

One of the most interesting and entertaining philosophical discussions of the last few decades is the discussion between Daniel Dennett and John Searle on the existence of intrinsic intentionality. Dennett denies the existence of phenomena with intrinsic intentionality. Searle, however, is convinced that some mental phenomena exhibit intrinsic intentionality. According to me, this discussion has been obscured by some serious misunderstandings with regard to the concept ‘intrinsic intentionality’. For instance, most philosophers fail to realize that it is possible that the intentionality of a phenomenon is partly intrinsic and partly observer relative. Moreover, many philosophers are mixing up the concepts ‘original intentionality’ and ‘intrinsic intentionality’. In fact, there is, in the philosophical literature, no strict and unambiguous definition of the concept ‘intrinsic intentionality’. In this article, I will try to remedy this. I will also try to give strict and unambiguous definitions of the concepts ‘observer relative intentionality’, ‘original intentionality’, and ‘derived intentionality’. These definitions will be used for an examination of the intentionality of formal mathematical systems. In conclusion, I will make a comparison between the (intrinsic) intentionality of formal mathematical systems on the one hand, and the (intrinsic) intentionality of human beings on the other hand.     

Nucleotide sequence evidence for rapid genotypic shifts in the bovine mitochondrial DNA D-loop

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is unusual in its rapid rate of evolution and high level of intraspecies sequence variation. The latter is thought to be related to the strict maternal inheritance of mtDNA, which effectively isolates within a species mitochondrial gene pools that accumulate mutations and vary independently. A fundamental and as yet unexplained aspect of this process is how, in the face of somatic and germ-line mtDNA ploidy of 10(3) to 10(5) (refs 4, 5), individual variant mtDNA molecules resulting from mutational events can come to dominate the large intracellular mtDNA population so rapidly. To help answer this question, we have determined here the nucleotide sequence of all or part of the D-loop region in 14 maternally related Holstein cows. Four different D-loop sequences can be distinguished in the mtDNA of these animals. One explanation is that multiple mitochondrial genotypes existed in the maternal germ line and that expansion or segregation of one of these genotypes during oogenesis or early development led to the rapid genotypic shifts observed.     

Lymphopenia and lymphocyte transformation in alcoholics.

The basis of peripheral blood lymphopenia observed in patients with chronic alcoholism and liver disease was investigated by examining the effect of sera of these patients on in vitro transformation of normal human peripheral blood lymphocytes. A positive correlation was demonstrated between the serum inhibition of phytohaemagglutinin- and pokeweed mitogen-induced transformation and the degree of lymphopenia. Thus serum factors may contribute to the observed lymphopenia by inhibiting lymphocyte production in vivo.     

Feline sarcoma virus polyprotein P115 binds a host phosphoprotein in transformed cells

Several independent isoltes of feline sarcoma virus (FeSV) have been described. Such viruses are apparently derived by genetic recombination between feline leukaemia virus (FeLV) genomic RNA and host cellular genetic sequences with transforming potential. Two FeSV isolates, one originally described by Gardner and the second by Snyder-Theilen, have been shown to encode polyproteins of around 115,000 molecular weight. Both polyproteins contain FeLV structural components (p15, p12) at their amino terminus in addition to nonstructural carboxyl terminal components encoded by acquired sequences within the FeSV genome. We have previously shown that Gardner FeSV P115 contains multiple sites of phosphorylation within its nonstructural component and possesses an associated protein kinase activity. In the present study we describe the expression in cells derived from a number of mammalian species, of a highly conserved celklular phosphoprotein with binding affinity for Gardner FeSV P115. This protein, designated P150, exhibits an associated protein kinase activity and is immunologically and structurally distinct from polyproteins encoded by the Gardner or Snyder-Theilen strains of FeSV.     

Fabrication and Properties of CoSm-Based Multilayer Thin Films

In recent years, SmCo series thin films have been found to be good candidates for fabricating integrated electromagnetic components and ultrahigh density magnetic recording media[1,2]. Up to now,intensive studies of such films have been carried out in order to obtain appropriate microstructure, crystallographic orientation and other properties. Substitution of Cu or Ni for Co in SmCo/Cr series films leads to a decrease of the saturation magnetization, magnetic switching volume, and to an increase of uniaxial anisotropy and coercivity[3-5].Various deposition conditions have also been investigated[6]. The large increase in coercivity for the annealed SmCo/Cr films is due to the growth of crystallitest[7,8]. In this article, we report a study of the deposition process,structure, and magnetic behavior of sputtered Sm (Co,Cu, Ti)/Cr series thin films.……     

Identification of actin microfilaments in the neurosecretory axons of rat neural lobe]

Incubation of rat neural lobes with heavy meromyosin (HMM) after prolonged glycerination, induced characteristic arrowhead decoration of a number of microfilaments at different levels of the neurosecretory axons. In non terminal sections of axons the labelled microfilaments showed preferential relationships with microtubules in addition to occasional contacts with the axolemma and various axonal organelles. In axonal endings, they were mainly associated to microvesicles and appeared to be anchored on the axolemma facing the perivascular space at the level of membranous densifications.
