Effect of (+)-catechin on renal and intestinal transport.

The ability of dog renal cortex slices to accumulate beta-methyl-glucoside or glycine is enhanced by the flavonoid (+)-catechin at a concentration of 3.5 mM. This stimulatory effect is apparently due to a decreased rate of efflux of either substrate. On the other hand, the uptake of p-amino-hippuric acid and N1-methyl-nicotinamide is inhibited by (+)-catechin. The drug at the same concentration is without action on amino-acid transport by guinea-pig intestine in vitro.     

Preparation of specific antiserum against Rana esculenta pre-alpha lens crystallin.

Specific antiserum against Rana esculenta lens pre-alpha crystallin was prepared in a rabbit by injecting antigen-antibody precipitate of this crystallin obtained from immunoelectrophoresis of esculenta total soluble lens proteins against homologous antiserum.     

Distribution of the blood flow supplied by the vertebral artery in rats: anatomical, functional and pharmacological aspects.

In rats, the vertebral artery make only a minor contribution to the blood perfusion of the ponto-medullary area. This was measured with radioactive microspheres and was confirmed by methylmetacrylate casts and local injection of a centrally acting hypotensive drug.     

Cholesterol 7alpha-hydroxylase activity of the rat liver after hypophysectomy and administration of hypophyseal hormones (author's transl)]

In order to elucidate the role of the hypophysis in the regulation of cholesterol 7alpha-hydroxylase activity, male and female rats hypophysectomized on day 50 of life were treated with different hypophyseal hormones and tested on day 85 of life. Only a crude extract from human hypophysis and ovine prolactin was able to enhance the enzyme activity, thereby restoring the level of intact controls.     

Gastric mucus effusion elicited by oral copper compounds: potential anti-ulcer activity.

In rats, both Cu(I) and Cu(II) show an irritancy profile not shared with Cu degrees or Zn(II) or Ni(II). The gastric response to Cu(II), i.e. copius fluid and mucus secretion, can protect the stomach from the acute ulcerative effects of aspirin or physical stress administered subsequently.     

Influence of castration and testosterone replacement on hypothalamic tyrosine hydroxylase activity in the rat.

Hypothalamic tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) activity of castrate rats is modulated by testosterone propionate (TP) in vivo. Kinetic studies revealed that both Vmax and Km were virtually unaltered for substrate tyrosine in the presence of an excess of DMPH4 cofactor. TP replacement to castrate rats increased the Km for added DMPH4 cofactor, while Vmax decreased. These results suggest that TP decreases TH activity of castrate rats by inhibiting the enzyme-reduced pteridine cofactor complex.
