Gastric secretion in the rat following histidine loading

Zusammenfassung Nachweis, dass Pentagastrin (ICI-50123) 200 g/ml/kgh die Magensaftsekretion in der Shay-Ratte 2 h nach Ligatur des Pylorus erhöht. Die Histaminspeicher des Rattenmagens wurden reduziert und Histidindecarboxylase-Aktivität gesteigert. Verabreichung von 1000 mg/kg Histidin erhöht den basalen Histaminspiegel, jedoch wurde die Histidindecarboxylase-Aktivität bei normaler Magensaftsekretion nicht durch Pentagastrin induziert.     

Cloning of the breakpoint of an X;21 translocation associated with Duchenne muscular dystrophy

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is an X-linked recessive disorder which affects approximately 1 in 3,300 males, making it the most common of the neuromuscular dystrophies. The biochemical basis of the disease is unknown and as yet no effective treatment is available. A small number of females are also affected with the disease, and these have been found to carry X; autosome translocations involving variable autosomal sites but always with a breakpoint within band Xp21 of the X chromosome (implicated by other kinds of genetic evidence as the site of the DMD lesion). In these female patients the normal X chromosome is preferentially inactivated, which it is assumed silences their one normal DMD gene, leading to expression of the disease. In one such affected female the autosomal breakpoint lies in the middle of the short arm of chromosome 21, within a cluster of ribosomal RNA genes. Here we have used rRNA sequences as probes to clone the region spanning the translocation breakpoint. A sequence derived from the X-chromosomal portion of the clone detects a restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) which is closely linked to the DMD gene and uncovers chromosomal deletions in some male DMD patients.     

The chronic effects of nicotine monomethidide on gastric secretion in pylorus-ligated rats

Résumé L'action de la nicotine monométhyliodine (NMI) sur la sécrétion gastrique basique et sur les concentrations de choline de cervelles, d'acétylcholine et de nicotine et sur l'activité de la transacétylcholinestérase a été étudiée chez des rats. Le NMI, sel quaternaire de nicotine, qui ne traverse pas la barrière hématoencéphalique, a été administré dans de la gélatine à 6% en dosage sous-cutané de 1000 g/ml/kg/jour pendant 14 jours. Le NMI n'a pas changé de paramètres et aucune trace de nicotine n'a été découverte dans les homogénates de cervelles complètes.

Zusammenfassung An männlichen Ratten wurden nach 2 h Pylorusligatur Magensaftmenge, Volumen/100 g Körpergewicht, pH, Azidität, gesamte Azidität und Säureproduktion bestimmt und als Funktion von ICI-50123 studiert. Eine maximale Stimulation erfolgte bei einer Dosierung von 1000.0 g/kg s.c. Eine Abnahme der Säureproduktion zeigte sich bei supramaximaler Dosis.     

Fluorometric detection of serotonin using o-phthaldialdehyde: An improvement

Résumé Dans la détermination fluorimétrique du complexe sérotonine-OPT, le lavage des spécimens avec un volume égal de chloroforme, avant de l'évaluation, réduit l'interférence des blancs et la dispersion primaire. Cela permet une évaluation plus exacte de la fluorescence de la sérotonine et, dans quelques cas, l'usage de spectres autrement illisibles.     

Bowel serotonin levels in the fasted and non-fasted Sprague-Dawley rat

Zusammenfassung Der Serotoningehalt der Darmmucosa aus 14 Schnittpräparaten von Sprague-Dawley Rattenweibchen nach 16-stündigem Fasten und nach normaler Fütterung wurde bestimmt. Grössere Serotoningehalte wurden im oberen Teil des Verdauungstraktus (ausschliesslich den Magenblindsack) der Hungertiere gefunden.     

Swift fox response to prescribed fire in shortgrass steppe

Swift foxes ( Vulpes velox ) are shortgrass specialists and as a result are heavily dependent upon grassland disturbance regimes to maintain high-quality habitat. To better understand this relationship, we monitored the movement and spatial ecology of resident swift foxes before and after a 2005 prescribed burn in southeastern Colorado. We hypothesized that foxes would shift home ranges into and increase foraging activity within the prescribed burn area. Foxes did appear to alter their space-use patterns in response to the burn, although the response was constrained by territoriality. Foxes whose core-use areas overlapped the burn increased their use of the burn area for foraging and denning, but we did not observe shifts of individual home ranges to encompass more of the burned area. Foxes whose coreuse areas did not overlap the burn did not alter their space use or change home range boundaries in response to the burn. Because we observed only positive or neutral responses to prescribed burning, we recommend this tool as an appropriate method to maintain high-quality swift fox habitat.
