Blood pressure lowering effect of eicosapentaenoic acid-rich diet in normotensive,hypertensive and hyperlipemic subjects

Summary A mackerel diet or a herring diet in which two cans of fish fillet were consumed daily over 2 weeks within a prescribed regimen, in a crossover design, were given to 15 normotensive volunteers, 14 patients with mild essential hypertension and eight patients with type IV and V hyperlipoproteinemia (HLP). In normotensives a markedly lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure at the end of the period on the mackerel diet could be observed, whereas in hypertensive and hyperlipemic subjects only systolic blood pressure was significantly decreased. After the herring diet, which served as control, changes in blood pressure were of a minor degree.

Summary Peripherally self-injected acetaldehyde in interaction with environmental and nutritional variables significantly enhances alcohol drinking in rats and suggests an involvement of acetaldehyde in voluntary alcohol intake.     

A disc-electrophoresis investigation of certain characteristics of Triton X-100 solubilized proteins from malePeriplaneta americana

Resumen Un agregado de proteínas solubilizadas en Triton X-100 fue resuelto como una banda por electroforesis a un pH de 8.5. En un pH de 7.1 estas fracciones no demuestran el efecto de agregación. Solamente electroforesis conTris/glicina como amortiguador y concentraciones del detergente menor de 0.6% dieron resultados.     

Insect defences: taste alteration and endoparasites

Taste sensation and food selection by animals can change adaptively in response to experience, for example to redress specific nutrient deficiencies. We show here, in two species of caterpillar, that infection by lethal parasites alters the taste of specific phytochemicals for the larvae. Given that these compounds are toxic to the parasites and are found in plants eaten by the caterpillars, their changed taste may encourage parasitized caterpillars to increase consumption of plants that provide a biochemical defence against the invaders.
