Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is an autosomal dominant disorder of unknown aetiology that affects numerous body systems including skin, brain and kidneys. Some TSC has been linked to chromosome 9, additional TSC genes on chromosomes 11 and 12 have been proposed, but the majority of TSC families remain unlinked. Using TSC families in which data had excluded linkage to chromosome 9, we failed to detect linkage with loci on chromosomes 11, 12 and others. One marker examined was D16S283, the closest locus on the proximal side of the polycystic kidney disease type 1 (PKD1) gene. Linkage between TSC and D16S283 demonstrated a lod score of 9.50 at theta = 0.02 with one family independently presenting a lod score of 4.44 at theta = 0.05. These data reveal an important TSC locus near the region of PKD1 on chromosome 16p13. 相似文献

Summary Postmitochondrial supernatants prepared from livers of mice, rats, rabbits, dogs, and monkeys metabolized 2,4-dinitrotoluene. The pattern of metabolites was characterized in both sexes of the species examined. Selenium is an essential micronutrient that is incorporated into at least 25 selenoproteins encoded by the human genome, many of which serve antioxidant functions. Because patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) demonstrate nutritional deficiencies and are at increased risk for colon cancer due to heightened inflammation and oxidative stress, selenoprotein dysfunction may contribute to disease progression. Over the years, numerous studies have analyzed the effects of selenoprotein loss and shown that they are important mediators of intestinal inflammation and carcinogenesis. In particular, recent work has focused on the role of selenoprotein P (SEPP1), a major selenium transport protein which also has endogenous antioxidant function. These experiments determined SEPP1 loss altered immune and epithelial cellular function in a murine model of colitis-associated carcinoma. Here, we discuss the current knowledge of SEPP1 and selenoprotein function in the setting of IBD, colitis, and inflammatory tumorigenesis. 相似文献

Relation of fish communities to environmental conditions in urban streams of the Wasatch Front, Utah
Twenty-eight sites along the Wasatch Front, north central Utah, representing the range of urban land use intensity for wadeable streams of the area, were sampled in September 2000. Fish communities were assessed by single-pass electrofishing, and physical habitat and water-quality characteristics were measured. On average, nonnative species comprised 54% of species richness and 53% of relative abundance, although only Salmo trutta and Pimephales promelas were very abundant at any 1 site. Salmo trutta and Catostomus platyrhynchus , a native species, were the most widely distributed and abundant species captured. Analysis of fish communities using nonmetric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) revealed a community gradient from sites dominated by Salmo trutta and Cottus species ( C. bairdi , C. beldingi ) to sites dominated by Catostomus platyrhynchus . Sites dominated by C. platyrhynchus were smaller in size and had less habitat cover, smaller average substrate size, higher concentrations of dissolved constituents, and higher water temperature than sites dominated by S. trutta . Sites dominated by C. platyrhynchus were located in more intensely urbanized watersheds at lower elevations. Stream size and associated instream habitat availability appear to limit S. trutta distribution and abundance, while native species appear more tolerant of decreased water quality and increased water temperatures in more urbanized streams. Most of the study sites are affected by development of water infrastructure for human water use (e.g., dams and diversions), and this infrastructure may play a role in dispersal of species. 相似文献

Between 1983 and 1985, 97 mottled sculpin, Cottus bairdi Girard, were examined from five collection sites in central Utah for parasites. Eight different species of parasites were observed, representing seven genera of Protozoa ( Plistophora, Myxidium, Myxobolus, Ichthyophthirius, Trichodina, Apiosoma, Eimeria ) and one genus of Nematoda ( Rhabdochona ). The highest number of parasites was found in sculpin from the Provo River near residential areas, while the lowest number was recorded from Hobble Creek, a nearby pristine area. A complete list of parasites for C. bairdi with literature citations is presented. Each observed parasite is discussed emphasizing pathogenesis to the host. 相似文献

Summary Hypertrophy of nucleoli is associated with DNA synthesis in the hepatocytes of untreated rats just as it is in stimulated animals.
