In mammals, social and reproductive behaviours are modulated by pheromones, which are chemical signals that convey information about sex and strain. The vomeronasal organ, located at the base of the nasal septum, is responsible for mediating pheromone information in mice. Two classes of putative pheromone receptor gene families, V1R and V2R, are expressed by vomeronasal sensory neurons in mutually segregated epithelial zones of the vomeronasal organ. Although numerous studies have suggested that pheromones originate from urine, direct recordings of behaving mice have shown that neuronal firing in the vomeronasal system is modulated by physical contact with the facial area. Here we identify a male-specific 7-kDa peptide secreted from the extraorbital lacrimal gland. This peptide, which we named exocrine gland-secreting peptide 1 (ESP1), is encoded by a gene from a previously unrecognized large family clustered in proximity to the class I major histocompatibility complex (MHC) region. ESP1 is secreted from the eyes and is transferred to the female vomeronasal organ, where it stimulates V2R-expressing vomeronasal sensory neurons and elicits an electrical response. Our results indicate that mice respond to sex-specific peptides released from exocrine glands through the vomeronasal system during direct contact.  相似文献

The roots of most higher plants form arbuscular mycorrhiza, an ancient, phosphate-acquiring symbiosis with fungi, whereas only four related plant orders are able to engage in the evolutionary younger nitrogen-fixing root-nodule symbiosis with bacteria. Plant symbioses with bacteria and fungi require a set of common signal transduction components that redirect root cell development. Here we present two highly homologous genes from Lotus japonicus, CASTOR and POLLUX, that are indispensable for microbial admission into plant cells and act upstream of intracellular calcium spiking, one of the earliest plant responses to symbiotic stimulation. Surprisingly, both twin proteins are localized in the plastids of root cells, indicating a previously unrecognized role of this ancient endosymbiont in controlling intracellular symbioses that evolved more recently.  相似文献

Separation of a lipophilic extract of a soft coral,Sinularia sp., assayed by enhancement of glucose transport in rat adipocytes, gave farnesyl 4-O--D-arabinopyranosyl--D-arabinopyranoside-2,2,3-triacetate (1a) whose structure was determined by spectroscopy. During the upward period of solar cycle 23, the Imaging Riometer at Zhongshan, Antarctica (geomag. lat. 74.5 S) was used to study the solar proton events and the Xray solar flares which are associated with the absorption events. In our study, the relationship between the absorption intensity and X-ray flux is found in a power form which is consistent with the theoretical result. The imaging riometer absorption data at Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard reconfirm the above relationship. We also argue that only M-class flares can generate a significant daytime absorption.  相似文献

Separation of a lipophilic extract of the bryozoan,Dakaira subovoidea, a common fouling organism of underwater structures, guided by inhibition of lipid peroxide formation in rat liver microsomes, gave 5,7-dihydroxy-1-hydroxymethyl-6-oxo-6H-anthra[1,9-bc]thiophene (1a) and its 1-methoxycarbonyl derivative (1c), together with the known 1,8-dihydroxyanthraquinone (2).
