(E,E)-10,12-Hexadecadienal: A component of the female sex pheromone of the spiny bollworm,Earias insulana (Boisd.) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)

Summary (E,E)-10,12-Hexadecadienal has been identified as a component of the sex pheromone of the female spiny bollworm moth,Earias insulana, by gas-chromatographic, electroantennographic and microchemical studies of abdominal tip extracts and entrained volatiles from female moths.This work was carried out under Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food licence HH 11599/139, issued under the Destructive Pests and Diseases of Plants Order 1965.     

Radiation-released histamine in the rhesus monkey as modified by mast-cell depletion and antihistamine.

4000 rads of mixed gamma neutron radiation administered to rhesus monkeys released a significant amount of histamine into their circulation. When the monkeys were treated with a mast-cell histamine depleter (compound 48/80) for 4 days and then irradiated, no increase in circulating histamine was seen. When 48/80 was give 20 min after irradiation, only a slight increase in histamine was seen, indicating that 4000 rads had released most of the mast-cell histamine.     

The effect of postnatal undernourishment on epileptiform kindling of dorsal hippocampus

Summary Rats were undernourished postnatally from birth through 20 days of age. They were subsequently tested for susceptibility to motor seizures kindled in hippocampus in adulthood. Compared to littermate control animals the postnatally undernourished rats were more susceptible to the kindling treatment. We conclude that early postnatal undernourishment has a permanent effect on susceptibility of the hippocampus to electrically-induced seizures.This work was supported by Public Health Service grant NS 13799, National Science Foundation grant GB 35532, and by Hoffman-LaRoche, Inc.     

Radio-immunologic determination of hypophyseal vasotocin by Phoxinus laevis during experimental modification of osmotic equilibrium]

Hypophysial vasotocin of Phoxinus laevis is determined by radio-immunoassay. With different sea water dilutions it is shown that hypophysial vasotocin concentration varies with ambient salinity. This fact agrees with histological pictures. Moreover, in comparison with the results of other authors, it is established that the hypophysial morphological modifications appeared only after the hormonal changes.     

Cholesterol content and cholesterol esterifying activity of various organs in guinea pigs

In various organs of the guinea pig, the total cholesterol content of an organ was significantly correlated with the percentage of esterified cholesterol present in this organ. Cholesterol esterifying capacity was shown in most organs, with highest activities in the adrenals, the spleen and the liver. The significant correlation found between the cholesteryl ester content of an organ and its acyl cholesterol acyltransferase activity suggests a possible role of this enzyme in determining the level of the total and esterified cholesterol in a tissue.     

The v-myc oncogene is sufficient to induce growth transformation of chick neuroretina cells

A number of studies have shown that full transformation of non-established rodent fibroblasts can be efficiently achieved in vitro by the concerted action of two oncogenes belonging to different complementation groups. Extension of the two-genes carcinogenesis model to other differentiated cell types, presumably endowed with different controls of growth, is desirable for a better understanding of questions such as the host cell selectivity of oncogene action. A recent report claimed that cooperation between two oncogenes, v-myc and v-mil, is required to achieve transformation of chicken embryo neuroretina cells, which are characterized by a limited growth capacity in monolayer culture. Here we present evidence that the v-myc oncogene alone is sufficient to induce growth transformation of glial and neuronal precursor cell types from chick neuroretina. We also report that induction of transformation by v-myc is accompanied by faithful preservation of some of the differentiated functions of the chick cells.
