A selective concentration-dependent dysrhythmogenic and antidysrhythmic action of prostaglandins E2, F2α and I2 (prostacyclin) on isolated rat hearts

Summary Prostaglandins (PGs) E₂, F₂, and I₂ were examined for their effects on the electrical and mechanical activities of isolated rat, rabbit and guinea-pig hearts. All PGs produced dysrhythmias in rat hearts at low concentrations only, while higher concentrations were antiarrhythmic. Guinea-pig hearts were less responsive while rabbit hearts were completely resistant.We thank the Manitoba Heart Foundation for financial support and Dr J. The induction of chromosome aberrations in human lymphocytes by negative π-mesons under conditions of anoxia and oxygenation

Summary After a dose of 3.0 Gy in the peak position of the pion depth-dose curve, the ratios between observed chromosome aberration yields under conditions of oxygenation and of anoxia were obtained for lymphocytes exposed at 3 depths in a plastic phantom. These ratios were 3.7, 1.9 and 1.3 in the plateau, peak and post-peak positions, respectively, suggesting a corresponding decrease in the oxygen enhancement ratio.Acknowledgments. Active site structural change of α-chymotrypsin due to 2-halogeno-ethanols; comparison with ethanol, 1-propanol,and urea

Summary 2-Halogeno-ethanols change the active site structure of -chymotrypsin more rapidly and effectively than ethanol, 1-propanol and urea, probably before producing an extensive conformation change.     

Androgen levels in the rete testis fluid during sexual development

Summary The concentrations of testosterone (T) and 5-dihydrotestosterone were measured in fluid collected from the rete testis of immature and adult rats. The results indicate that adult levels of T are attained in the seminiferous tubules much earlier than in the peripheral circulation.This work was performed at the Worcester Foundation for Experimental Biology, Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, USA and supported by the National Institutes of Health through grants HD12641 and HD12642. Protein degradation in human T-lymphocytes

Summary Protein from resting or phytohemagglutinin-stimulated human peripheral blood T-lymphocytes, pulse-labeled in vitro for 1 h with³H-leucine, had a half-life of 30 h.     

Visualization of DNA in various phages (T4, χ, T7, ϕ 29) by ethidium bromide epi-fluorescent microscopy

Summary DNA-containing areas in various phages (T4, , T7 and 29) could be observed at the light microscopic level using ethidium bromide epi-fluorescent microscopy. The fluorescent intensity per phage was in linear proportion to the DNA content in each phage.Acknowledgements. Prostaglandin E2 increases mechanically evoked potentials in the peripheral nerve

Summary Subdermal injections of PGE₂ (5 g) in the rat foot lead to increases in the potentials evoked in sensory nerve branches by the mechanical stimulation of the skin. This sensitization of both A and C fibres complements the previously described hyperalgesic effects of prostaglandins of the E series.     

Reserpine prevents goldthioglucose hypothalamic lesions in mice

Summary In reserpinized mice the occurrence of goldthioglucose hypothalamic lesions was significantly lower than in control mice. Some protection was also conferred by serotonin-receptor blockers and by treatment with nialamide+DL--methyldopa, but the protective effect of reserpine was not reversed by serotonergic and dopaminergic agonists, alone or in combination, nor by insulin.     

Preparation and oxygen binding properties of soluble covalent hemoglobin-dextran conjugates

Summary Stroma-free hemoglobin solutions present some drawbacks when used as blood substitutes, essentially because the hemoprotein has a low vascular retention, due to its small hydrodynamic volume. Covalent coupling of the protein with dextran derivatives artificially increases its size and affords polymeric conjugates whose oxygen-binding properties (Barcroft's curve, Hill coefficient) depend on the molecular weight.The authors wish to thank Prof. J.
