Summary CIBA 21 401-Ba, a glucofuranoside derivative (ethyl-3,5,6-O-benzyl-d-glucofuranoside), antagonizes in vitro the smooth-muscle action of a large number of biogenic amines and polypeptides, the accelerated migration of leucocytes induced by endotoxin, and the Schultz-Dale phenomenon. In vivo, the compound shows anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic effects and improves the survival rate of infected mice treated with suboptimal doses of a sulphonamide.     

Evidence of genetic control of blood potassium type in the marwari breed of sheep in India

Résumé Par le photomètre Flame la concentration du potassium dans le sang de 102 moutons marvaris (4 mâles, 49 femelles et leurs 49 descendants) a été mesuré. Sur ce nombre, 45 appartiennent au type HK (à forte concentration, moyenne 30,34 mEq/l — de 24,97 à 37,12) et 27 au type LK (à faible concentration, moyenne 9,72 mEq/l, — de 6,40 à 12,80). Le caractère HK est donc héréditaire récessif tandis que les individus de type LK sont peut-être homozygotes ou héterozygotes.

Zusammenfassung Der Herzmuskel von Mollusken unterscheidet sich von der übrigen Molluskenmuskulatur entsprechend wie sich der Herzmuskel der Wirbeltiere von ihrer Skelettmuskulatur unterscheidet, insofern man die Beziehungen zwischen passiver und aktiver Kraft betrachtet. Im Herzmuskel der Mollusken lässt sich der maximale Tetanus für die Messung der aktiven Kraft verwenden.

Summary The syntheses and structure-determinations of 1, 22- and 1, 2-methylene-19-nor-17-acetoxy-progesterones described prove that there is no influence of the angular C₁₀-methylgroup on the steric course of theCourey-methylenations of ¹-3-keto-steroids.     

In vitro lysis of erythrocytes and chromaffine granules by prenylamine

Zusammenfassung In der Oberflächenaktivität des Prenylamins, bedingt durch den lipophilen Diphenylpropylanteil des Moleküls, wird die Ursache dafür erblickt, dass hohe Konzentrationen zur Freisetzung von Brenzcatechinaminen aus chromaffinen Granula sowie von Hämoglobin aus Erythrocyten führen. Elektronenmikroskopische Aufnahmen zeigten schwere Membranschädigungen der mit Prenylamin inkubierten Granula. Prenylamin hemmte bzw. verhinderte die Hämolyse der in hypotonischer Salzlösung suspendierten Erythrozyten. Ein gemeinsamer Mechanismus, der sowohl die granulolytische und hämolytische als auch die protektive Wirkung auf Granula- und Erythrozytenmembran erklären könnte, wird diskutiert.
