Chemical investigation of hassium (element 108)

The periodic table provides a classification of the chemical properties of the elements. But for the heaviest elements, the transactinides, this role of the periodic table reaches its limits because increasingly strong relativistic effects on the valence electron shells can induce deviations from known trends in chemical properties. In the case of the first two transactinides, elements 104 and 105, relativistic effects do indeed influence their chemical properties, whereas elements 106 and 107 both behave as expected from their position within the periodic table. Here we report the chemical separation and characterization of only seven detected atoms of element 108 (hassium, Hs), which were generated as isotopes (269)Hs (refs 8, 9) and (270)Hs (ref. 10) in the fusion reaction between (26)Mg and (248)Cm. The hassium atoms are immediately oxidized to a highly volatile oxide, presumably HsO(4), for which we determine an enthalpy of adsorption on our detector surface that is comparable to the adsorption enthalpy determined under identical conditions for the osmium oxide OsO(4). These results provide evidence that the chemical properties of hassium and its lighter homologue osmium are similar, thus confirming that hassium exhibits properties as expected from its position in group 8 of the periodic table.

Pre-selecting young bulls before progeny-testing with marker-assisted BLUP

Suppose that a QTL affecting milk production trait or dairy cattle has been identified,and the relative distances between the QTL and the markers are hnown without error.The relative efficiency of pre-selection of young bulls before progeny-testing with marker-assisted BLUP(MBLUP) over conventional progeny-testing(i.e.random selection before progeny-testing)for five generations was studied using Monte Carlo simulation.Different numbers of QTL alleles(two or infinite),initial frequencies of the favorable QTL allele(0.1 and 0.5,when the QTL has two alleles),distances between the adjacent markers(5 cM or 20 cM),and ratios of the QTL variance to the genetic variance(10%,25%,and 50%)were considered in the simulation.The results showed that the relative efficiency of MBLUP was higher when the marker distance was 5 cM than that when the distance was 20 cM.The larger the QTL alleic effect,the lower the MBLUP efficiency.The relative superiority of MBLUP was higher when the QTL had two alleles and the frequency of the favorable QTL allele was low in the base population.The relative superiority of MBLUP decreased with th progress of generation in all cases and the decreasing rate was getting higher with the increase of marker density and QTL effect.

A transgenic insertion upstream of sox9 is associated with dominant XX sex reversal in the mouse

In most mammals, male development is triggered by the transient expression of the Y-chromosome gene, Sry, which initiates a cascade of gene interactions ultimately leading to the formation of a testis from the indifferent fetal gonad. Several genes, in particular Sox9, have a crucial role in this pathway. Despite this, the direct downstream targets of Sry and the nature of the pathway itself remain to be clearly established. We report here a new dominant insertional mutation, Odsex (Ods), in which XX mice carrying a 150-kb deletion (approximately 1 Mb upstream of Sox9) develop as sterile XX males lacking Sry. During embryogenesis, wild-type XX fetal gonads downregulate Sox9 expression, whereas XY and XX Ods/+ fetal gonads upregulate and maintain its expression. We propose that Ods has removed a long-range, gonad-specific regulatory element that mediates the repression of Sox9 expression in XX fetal gonads. This repression would normally be antagonized by Sry protein in XY embryos. Our data are consistent with Sox9 being a direct downstream target of Sry and provide genetic evidence to support a general repressor model of sex determination in mammals.     

木果楝挥发油成分的GC-MS分析

采用气相色谱-质谱联用技术,首次对木果楝叶子和果实挥发油进行了成分分析,从木果楝叶子和果实分别鉴定出了33和36种化合物,分别占挥发油的99.11%和97.63%.两个部位中挥发油化学组成各有异同,但其主要成分均是倍半萜类化合物b-桉叶烯和γ-桉叶烯.本研究结果可为木果楝的综合开发利用提供理论依据.     

一种基于星型子网的片上网络结构研究

提出了一种基于星型子网的片上网络结构SSBM NoC（Star-Subnet-Based-MeshNoC）,它在已有网格状结构的基础上引入了子网的概念,并在子网内使用星型拓扑结构来连接一个交换机与四个网络节点。OPNET仿真结果表明,在同等网络规模下SSBM结构较之单纯的二维网格状结构具有更少的端到端通信延时,并仅使用其1/4数目的交换机,而交换机的负载则不到其两倍。

给出了求解两类特殊的Hamming距离下单位型单发点树型网络最短路改进问题的多项式时间算法,并研究了一般树型网络下该问题的性质.解决了Hamming距离下逆问题(改进问题)中的部分问题,有助于设计出更多的求解Hamming距离下单位型树型网络最短路改进问题的算法.
