Predicting distributions of known and unknown reptile species in Madagascar   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Despite the importance of tropical biodiversity, informative species distributional data are seldom available for biogeographical study or setting conservation priorities. Modelling ecological niche distributions of species offers a potential solution; however, the utility of old locality data from museums, and of more recent remotely sensed satellite data, remains poorly explored, especially for rapidly changing tropical landscapes. Using 29 modern data sets of environmental land coverage and 621 chameleon occurrence localities from Madagascar (historical and recent), here we demonstrate a significant ability of our niche models in predicting species distribution. At 11 recently inventoried sites, highest predictive success (85.1%) was obtained for models based only on modern occurrence data (74.7% and 82.8% predictive success, respectively, for pre-1978 and all data combined). Notably, these models also identified three intersecting areas of over-prediction that recently yielded seven chameleon species new to science. We conclude that ecological niche modelling using recent locality records and readily available environmental coverage data provides informative biogeographical data for poorly known tropical landscapes, and offers innovative potential for the discovery of unknown distributional areas and unknown species.  相似文献

Through the development of a high-acuity fovea, primates with frontal eyes have acquired the ability to use binocular eye movements to track small objects moving in space. The smooth-pursuit system moves both eyes in the same direction to track movement in the frontal plane (frontal pursuit), whereas the vergence system moves left and right eyes in opposite directions to track targets moving towards or away from the observer (vergence tracking). In the cerebral cortex and brainstem, signals related to vergence eye movements--and the retinal disparity and blur signals that elicit them--are coded independently of signals related to frontal pursuit. Here we show that these types of signal are represented in a completely different way in the smooth-pursuit region of the frontal eye fields. Neurons of the frontal eye field modulate strongly during both frontal pursuit and vergence tracking, which results in three-dimensional cartesian representations of eye movements. We propose that the brain creates this distinctly different intermediate representation to allow these neurons to function as part of a system that enables primates to track and manipulate objects moving in three-dimensional space.  相似文献

The parasite Plasmodium falciparum is responsible for hundreds of millions of cases of malaria, and kills more than one million African children annually. Here we report an analysis of the genome sequence of P. falciparum clone 3D7. The 23-megabase nuclear genome consists of 14 chromosomes, encodes about 5,300 genes, and is the most (A + T)-rich genome sequenced to date. Genes involved in antigenic variation are concentrated in the subtelomeric regions of the chromosomes. Compared to the genomes of free-living eukaryotic microbes, the genome of this intracellular parasite encodes fewer enzymes and transporters, but a large proportion of genes are devoted to immune evasion and host-parasite interactions. Many nuclear-encoded proteins are targeted to the apicoplast, an organelle involved in fatty-acid and isoprenoid metabolism. The genome sequence provides the foundation for future studies of this organism, and is being exploited in the search for new drugs and vaccines to fight malaria.  相似文献

Three structural motifs in the invariant chain (li) control the intracellular transport of class II major histocompatibility complex molecules. An endoplasmic reticulum retention signal in the full-length li suggests a role for li in the alpha-beta heterodimer assembly. Another signal motif directs a truncated li, alone or associated with individual class II chains, to a degradation compartment by a pathway circumventing the Golgi. When this truncated li binds alpha-beta dimers, a third signal dominates, directing the complex by way of the Golgi to vesicles in the cell periphery, which may represent a subcompartment of recycling endosomes.  相似文献

We report here significant primary sequence homology among the predicted translational products of three genes: CDC4 , CDC36 and ets. CDC4 and CDC36 are Saccharomyces cerevisiae cell division cycle genes, while ets is a transformation-specific sequence of avian erythroblastosis virus E26. The deduced primary structures of the three gene products were compared by computer to a large data base of known and predicted protein sequences. The search revealed 22.0-25.5% identity over regions of 140-206 codons, respectively between the different pairwise combinations. For these particular sequences, these identity scores fall 3.4-4.0 standard deviations above the empirically-determined mean values of fortuitous similarity. S. cerevisiae calls require CDC36 and CDC4 in order to complete two early events in the cell cycle: execution of start ( CDC36 ) and spindle pole body separation ( CDC4 ). In virus E26, the ets sequence is linked in frame with delta gag and mybE in the tripartite structure 5'-delta gag- mybE -ets-3', comprising the E26 transforming oncogene. The homologies described here suggest that the biochemical functions or regulation of the CDC4 , CDC36 and ets products may be related.  相似文献

The parasitic protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi can establish infection in humans and other vertebrate hosts through direct penetration of host cells by trypomastigotes transmitted by the insect vector. Although the molecular processes involved in trypomastigote interiorization of vertebrate cells are unknown, several studies suggest that surface glycoproteins are involved. It is likely that the proteins involved are specific to the trypomastigote stage of the parasite, since only trypomastigotes found in both the insect vector and the vertebrate host bloodstream are capable of invading vertebrate cells. In contrast, the epimastigote stage, found exclusively in the vector, and the amastigote stage, an intracellular stage in the vertebrate host, cannot penetrate the cell directly. We have therefore concentrated our efforts on trypomastigote surface proteins and, along with others, have identified two trypomastigote-specific surface glycoproteins of relative molecular mass (Mr) 90,000 (90K) and 85,000 (85K). Antibody neutralization experiments indicate that the 85K glycoprotein is necessary for efficient interiorization of trypomastigotes in mammalian cells. Here we describe the molecular cloning of a genomic DNA fragment that encodes antigenic determinants present in the 85K trypomastigote surface antigen. The polypeptide fragment encoded by the cloned DNA is recognized by serum from a T. cruzi-infected host and is inferred by DNA sequence analysis to contain a nonapeptide unit that is tandemly repeated five times. Also, the messenger complementary to the cloned DNA fragment is present only in the trypomastigote stage of the parasite.  相似文献

Class I MHC molecules acquire peptides from endogenously synthesized proteins, whereas class II antigens present peptides derived from extracellular compartment molecules. This dichotomy is due to the fact that the invariant chain associates with class II molecules in the endoplasmic reticulum, preventing binding of endogenous peptides. The mutually exclusive binding of peptide and invariant chain to class II molecules suggests that the invariant chain might play a part in autoimmune disease.  相似文献
