Clark's Nutcrackers harvest sugar pine seeds from cones

This is the first report of Clark’s Nutcrackers ( Nucifraga columbiana ) harvesting seeds from the cones of sugar pine ( Pinus lambertiana ), based on observations over several years in Crater Lake National Park, Oregon. The harvesting period in late September corresponded to peak cone-opening dates. Nutcrackers placed harvested seeds in their throat pouches, a behavior associated with seed caching.     

High-affinity binding of beta-alanine to cerebral synaptosomes might involve glycine-receptors.

High-affinity, Na+-independent binding of beta-alanine to a synaptosomal fraction of rat brain was potently inhibited by glycine and by some other alpha-amino acids, but not by taurine or GABA. This binding mechanism, which was also sensitive to both bicuculline and strychnine, might involve synaptic receptors for both beta-alanine and glycine.     

Do peripheral nerves contain a factor inducing acetylcholine sensitivity in skeletal muscle?

A crude extract of the sciatic nerve, eluate of dialyzed nerve extract or 2 folin-positive sephadex fractions induced acetylcholine sensitivity of extrajunctional regions in extensor digitorum longus muscle fibres of the rat, when released from silastic plates implanted for 3--4 days onto the muscle surface.     

A study on the effects of some drugs on DOCA induced hypertension in the rat

Chronic treatment with various drugs reduced the increase in arterial blood pressure, the ventricular hypertrophy and the thickening of pulmonary arterial and arteriolar walls.     

Comparison of the ototoxic effect of kanamycin on albino and pigmented rats, studied using an operant method.

A study was made of the effect of daily administration of kanamycin (400 mg kg-1) on the hearing of Wistar albino and Lister hooded (pigmented) rats, which had been conditioned to discriminate an acoustic signal. In all animals except one, the drug caused severe, permanent hearing impairment and there was no difference between albino and pigmented rats in onset or degree. Other work has suggested a mediatory role for melanin pigment in such drug ototoxicity but the significance of this must be questioned in view of the failure to find any differences in functional deficit.
