Variance in clutch size

Summary Most studies of the evolution of clutch size have concentrated on changes in the mean and have neglected the variance of clutch size. We suggest that the variance is very important and discuss how it might be fruitfully analyzed.Acknowledgment. Reversible lenticular opacities induced in rats by emotional stress

Zusammenfassung Ratten (20 Tiere, 45 Tage alt) erhielten 150 mg/kg paraglynes Hydrochlorid s.c. injiziert. Akustischer Schock (2 h später) ergab bei 16 von 20 Tieren eine reversible subkapsuläre Linsentrübung.

Versuche zur biologischen Bestimmung der Sedimentationskonstanten kleiner neurotroper Viren in der präparativen Ultrazentrifuge «ZF 3»

Summary An attempt is made to determine the sedimentation constant by means of biological assay in animal viruses. A new type of electromagnetic high speed centrifuge (Type ZF 3) was used for this purpose. An essential feature of this model is that the entire volume for assay is included in one single cell positioned at an angle of 90° to the axis of rotation. The murine EMC virus was used to show that the centrifuge is suitable for the biological determination ofS-values, in spite of the fact that the gravitational field in the cell is inhomogeneous and that the cell walls are not adapted to the radial migrational direction of the centrifuged particles.     

Separation of mast cells from the peritoneal fluid of the rat with a GE nucleopore filter

Zusammenfassung Filtrationsmethode der Trennung von Mastzellen aus der Abdominalhöhlenflüssigkeit der Ratte: Die separierten Zellen werden auf dem Filter fixiert, gefärbt und untersucht. Die Methode eignet sich für Untersuchungen von Mastzellreaktionen in vitro.     

Cadmium as a trace element and cadmium binding components in human cells

Zusammenfassung Fötale menschliche Fibroblasten wurden in einem¹⁰⁹Cd und⁶⁵Zn enthaltenden Kultur medium gezÜchtet.¹⁰⁹Cd wurde in allen Zellen kontinuierlich absorbiert. Mit Gel-Filtration wurde der Zellsaft in 2 Komponenten aufgetrennt, die beide¹⁰⁹Cd enthielten. ähnliche,¹⁰⁹Cd bindende Komponenten wurden auch in Rattenleber-Homogenaten gefunden.
