Summary Leydig cell nuclear area and ⁵-3-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase activity were increased in the testis ofBufo melanostictus 2 days after a single short-term cold exposure. Both parameters returned to normal values 4 days later.     

Identification of an acyclic diterpene alcohol in the defense secretion of soldiers ofReticulitermes lucifugus

Summary The defense secretion of soldiers ofReticulitermes lucifugus has been shown to contain, predominantly, (R)-(–)-(E,E)-geranyllinalool together with germacrene A and -farnesene.This report covers part of a collaborative study with J.-L. High-performance reversed-phase liquid chromatography (HPLC) of favism-inducing factors inVicia faba L.

Summary A HPLC assay for L-Dopa, convicine, and vicine in broad-bean extracts has been developed. The distribution of these compounds in the different organs of the plant has been studied, especially in the seeds, where their presence may cause favism if the beans are used as food.Work supported by C.N.R. through Progetto Finalizzato Miglioramento delle produzioni vegetali per fini alimentari ed industriali mediante interventi genetici. Genetic polymorphisms and intrauterine development. Evidence of decreased heterozygosity in light-for-dates human newborn babies

Summary In 2 independent samples of low-birth-weight infants the proportion of females and homozygotes for a series of polymorphic systems was higher in light-for-dates than in preterm babies. The observation seems to give support to the hypothesis that homozygosity for normal polymorphisms may decrease in general intrauterine growth rate. Since it is known that survival rate is strongly related to birth weight, a correlation between growth retardation and homozygosity may have a major role in the maintenance of such polimorphisms.We thank Prof. L. Release of nonspecific esterases from the roots ofVicia faba L

Summary Roots ofVicia faba L. immersed in a buffer solution were found to release esterases into the environment. The substrate -naphthylacetate was taken up by the roots and degraded, the hydrolysis products being released back into the surrounding medium.     

Effects of several preoperative medications on fat cell lipolysis, and activity of adipose tissue cyclic AMP phosphodiesterase.

Effects were examined of atropine, diazepam, pethidene, promethazine, scopolamine, omnopon and papaverine on basal and noradrenaline-stimulated lipolysis in rat isolated fat cells and on rat adipose tissue cyclic AMP phosphodiesterase activity. Papaverine at high concentration (1 mM) inhibited both basal and hormone-stimulated lipolysis, whereas diazepam enhanced basal lipolysis. At a 'clinical dose', omnopon increased both basal and noradrenaline-stimulated lipolysis. Adipose tissue cAMP phosphodiesterase activity was strongly inhibited by 1 mM diazepam, papaverine, promethazine and omnopon (280 microgram ml-1). Lack of enhancement of lipolysis by the established cAMP phosphodiesterase antagonist papaverine, is compatible with simultaneous inhibition also of adipose adenyl cyclase. Diazepam-stimulated lipolysis is compatible with its phosphodiesterase inhibitory activity. It is proposed that papaverine-containing omnopon may offer some survival advantages during surgical stress by facilitating a caloric supply.     

Alkaline phosphatase in human lymphocyte subpopulations.

The levels of membrane alkaline phosphatase have been measured on different lymphocyte fractions from human peripheral blood separated on bovine serum albumin discontinuous gradients. The peak in enzyme activity was observed in a non-T-, non-B-cell fraction, rich in "null" lymphocytes; the lowest values were found in the fraction with the highest proportion of T-cells.     

Comparative study of the effect of thymosin and supernatant from epithelial thymic cells on antibody production (author's transl)]

A thymic extract (TE) was prepared from supernatant of mice thymic epithelial cultures according to the purification of thymosin. TE and thymosin stimulated, in vitro, the immune response of mouse against deep red blood cells.     

Affinity chromatography of human serum proteins using matrix bound lectin fromViscum album L.

Summary The D-galactose specific lectin fromViscum album L. reacts with serum proteins that contain the corresponding D-galactopyranosyl residues. By affinity chromatography of human serum on lectin-sepharose IgM, ₂-macroglobulin, haptoglobin and -lipoprotein were quantitatively retained. Only parts of IgA, IgG and transferrin were retarded. The other serum proteins are unbounded as albumin, ₁A– and ₁C.
