A rapid method of following the spontaneous regression of experimental leukemias

Summary Transplantation of virus and chemically induced leukemias from C3H/He-mgxAKR/F₁ hybrid mice into C3H/He-mg males induced leukemias in the latter, which was followed by a spontaneous regression of the disease within a few days. The regression of leukemia could easily be followed by measuring the changes in the pyruvate kinase activity of para-aortic lymph node cells.     

Changes in glutamine levels during starvation and aestivation in the Indian apple snailPila globosa (Swainson)

Summary The glutamine levels in digestive gland, foot and body fluids of normal, starved and aestivatedPila globosa were estimated. Glutamine content was decreased during starvation and aestivation. The percent decrease was more during aestivation than starvation. The decrease may be due to low glutamine-synthetase activity or increased utilization for uric acid synthesis. This may have an adaptive value during aestivation and starvation.Acknowledgments. C. Sree Ramulu Chetty and P. Properties of vascular permeability factor in human sera for guinea-pig skin.

Properties of vascular permeability factor in native human sera (PF/Nat) showed close similarities with those of necrotizing factor. Time course studies revealed that skin necrosis could be initiated by enhanced vascular permeability.     

Changes in the activities of protein kinase modulators in the cerebellum of mice due to ethanol, caffeine, or phenobarbital administration.

Decreased activities of both the inhibitory modulator of adenosine 3':5'-monophosphate (cAMP)-dependent protein kinase (A-PK) as well as the stimulatory modulator of guanosine 3':5'-monophosphate (cGMP)-dependent protein kinase (G-PK) from the mouse cerebellum were noted due to the administration of excessive doses of ethanol, caffeine, and phenobarbital for up to 28 days. The dose-dependent of the inhibition of A-PK or the stimulation of G-PK was observed as a function of the amount of protein kinase modulators in the cerebellum of mice receiving different doses of ethanol.     

The structure of locomotor activity in bilobectomized cockroaches (Blaberus fuscus)

Summary The aperiodic activity patterns of bilobectomized cockroaches can largely be described by simple stochastic regularities: a) there are no correlations between the lengths of successive activity bursts and rest pauses, b) the probabilities for the transition from activity to rest and from rest to activity are time-independent. The activity sequence is strongly influenced by singular temperature steps or temperature cycles.
