Growth inhibitory,insecticidal and antifeedant effects of some antileukemic and cytotoxic quassinoids on two species of agricultural pests

Summary Several quassinoids, obtained by isolation and derivatization fromSimaba multiflora andSoulamea soulameoides, were evaluated for growth inhibitory and insecticidal effects against the tobacco budworm (Heliothis virescens) and for antifeedant effects againstH. virescens and the fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda). The relative activity of the quassinoids as insect growth inhibitors generally paralleled their known relative potency as antileukemic and cytotoxic agents.Phytochemical aspects of this work were supported by Contract CM-97295 with the Division of Cancer Treatment, National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Md. A comparison of the effects of the optical isomers of isoproterenol on energy metabolism in a mouse sarcoma

Summary Disturbance to energy production in the S180 sarcoma (CB) by optical isomers of isoproterenol was assessed from altered adenine nucleotide levels at 1 h. The L-isomer almost halved the ATP level and lowered the energy charge significantly; the D-isomer was inactive. Consequences of acute ischemia for the electrical and mechanical function of the ventricular myocardium. A brief review

Reduction or interruption of the blood supply to the myocardium leads to marked disturbances of electrical and mechanical function within a few seconds. Electrical dysfunction is characterized by an initial depolarization of the resting membrane, and a decrease of the amplitude, the upstroke velocity and the duration of the action potential. Both depolarization and depression of the action potential are closely associated with intracellular metabolic acidosis. After this initial phase, electrical cell-to-cell uncoupling develops, probably as a consequence of increased cytosolic free [Ca++]. Mechanical dysfunction is characterized by a dissociation of the initial decrease of active force development from the subsequent ischemic contracture. Active force development in acute ischemia is inhibited by the accumulation of ischemic metabolic products (H+, inorganic phosphate (Pi), Mg++) but not by a marked decrease of [ATP]. The subsequent ischemic contracture is probably initiated by release of Ca++ from intracellular stores. This release causes rapid consumption of ATP and the development of rigor within 1-2 minutes.     

Effect of dibutyryl cAMP and theophylline on cultured rat embryonic shields.

Effects of N6, O2 dibutyryl adenosine 3',5'-cyclic monophosphate (db-cAMP) and theophylline (Th) on cultured rat embryonic shields were studied. After addition of db-cAMP to the culture medium, an increase of the weight of explants and of the incidence of the skeletal muscle was observed. Theophylline seems to be ineffective.     

Chronic overcrowding decreases cytoplasmic free calcium levels in T lymphocytes of aged CBA/CA mice

Intracellular calcium concentration is a sensitive marker of the homeostasis of living cells, and its increase is an essential step of T lymphocyte activation. Changes in the environment provoke an adaptive stress-response of the organism. In our present work we have investigated the effect of chronic overcrowding on resting and lectin-stimulated cytoplasmic free calcium concentration of splenic T lymphocytes from young and aged CBA/CA mice (50 animals total). The animals were kept under ‘normal’ (68 cm²/animal) or ‘overcrowded’ (22 cm²/animal) conditions for 3 months. Young animals showed no change in resting and stimulated calcium after overcrowding. T cells from aged mice, however, displayed significantly smaller levels of both resting and lectin-stimulated intracellular calcium concentration (p<0.01 each), as compared to those of the non-stressed, aged animals. This inadequate adaptation in the calcium metabolism of T lymphocytes may significantly contribute to the diminished immune response of the aged in stress.     

Effect of steviol and its structural analogues on glucose production and oxygen uptake in rat renal tubules

The effect of several natural products of Stevia rebaudiana on glucose production and oxygen uptake in rat renal cortical tubules was investigated. Steviol, isosteviol and glucosilsteviol decreased glucose production and inhibited oxygen uptake. The sweet principle stevioside, and steviolbioside, however, were without effect on gluconeogenesis and oxygen uptake.     

Influence of Various Parameters on Collapse Behaviour of Thin Cylinders

Axial compression experiments on as received aluminum tubes and tubes with wall thickness eccentricity incorporated by off centre machining showed that the eccentricity caused transition of their collapse mode from axisymmetric to diamond. The numerical simulation of the collapse phenomenon was undertaken using a static non-linear Finite Element Analysis in ANSYS, and results are found to compare well with the experimental load compression and energy absorption responses for axisymmetric concertina and non-axisymmetric diamond modes. Having validated the numerical model with experiments, it has been used to undertake a systematic study of the load - compression characteristics and collapse mode transitions of the tubes with varying eccentricities in wall thickness and boundary conditions, as well as the material properties.
