3-Amino-3-deoxy-D-glucose: an antibiotic produced by a deep-sea bacterium

Summary Gram-positive bacteria isolated from deep-sea sediments of the Pacific basin showed considerable antibacterial activity. ABacillus strain, isolated from a sediment sample collected at a depth of 4310 m, was shown to produce 3-amino-3-deoxy-D-glucose, a known antibiotic.

Summary The distribution of calcium in the fine-fibred bone tissue of the human adult tibia is measured with the electron probe X-ray microanalyzer. Variations in the calcium concentration may be related to the stratified fine structure of the bone matrix.     

Isolation of a hexaprenylhydroquinone sulfate from the marine sponge Dysidea sp. as an H,K-ATPase inhibitor

A hexaprenylhydroquinone sulfate has been isolated as an H,K-ATPase inhibitor from a marine sponge Dysidea sp. It also inhibited phospholipase A2 as well as secretion of gastric acid in rats.     

Amylase released from the parotid gland by pilocarpine elevates the enzyme activity in the submandibular and sublingual glands of rats

Summary Stimulation by pilocarpine led to a marked increase in amylase activity in the submadibular and sublingual glands and serum, and resulted in a considerable depletion of the enzyme in the parotid gland and pancreas of rats. Parotidectomy reduced these pilocarpine effects. It is conluded that amylaser released by pilocarpine from the parotid gland but not from the pancreas elevated the nzyme activity in the submandibular and sublingual glands.     

Purification of an L-fucose binding lectin fromUlex europeus by affinity column chromatography

Summary An L-fucose binding lectin fromUlex europeus was purified by affinity column chromatography using an L-fucose-starch complex. The lectin thus purified had a mol.wt of 60,000, and consisted of 2 glycoprotein subunit with mol.wt 29,000 and 31,000, respectively.
