Binding of centchroman—a nonsteroidal antifertility agent to human plasma proteins

Summary Centchroman, a non-steroidal antifertility agent showed a low affinity (K_d=13.19×10^–6 M) and nonsaturable binding to human plasma. Centchroman did not complete either with sex hormone binding globulin or corticosteroid binding globulin. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and temperature dependent binding characteristics revealed that the protein responsible for centchroman binding to human plasma resembles albumin.Acknowledgment. Toxic substances produced byFusarium. VII. Control of fusarial wilt of safflower by root exudates and extractives ofRuellia tuberosa

Summary Exudates and extractives of roots ofRuellia tuberosa, containing 2,6-dimethoxyquinone, acacetin and a C₁₆-quinone, have been shown to produce significant protective and curative actions againstFusarium oxysporum-incited wilt of safflower. The potentiality of the root extractives as a foliar fungicide is appraised.     

Respiratory burst in peritoneal exudate cells in response to a modified tuftsin.

Intraperitoneal administration of tuftsin-M [Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-NH-(CH2)2-NH-CO-C15H31] to Balb/C mice has been shown to induce a respiratory burst in the peritoneal exudate cells. The macrophages exhibited enhanced levels of O2-, H2O2, NADPH oxidase and myeloperoxidase, but the activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase remained virtually unchanged. The magnitude of the oxidative burst depended directly on the dose of tuftsin-M; higher activity was observed at higher doses of the peptide. Tuftsin-M enhanced the generation of both O2- and H2O2 under in vitro conditions, as did phorbol myristate acetate. These results suggest that tuftsin-M could enhance non-specific defence against infections by activating the macrophages.     

Acid phosphatase activity of small intestine of mice after exposure to different doses of gamma rays

Summary Effect of whole-body radiation at 3 different dose levels on the activity of acid phosphatase was studied in the small intestine of Swiss albino mice. In all the 3 exposure groups the enzyme activity increased significantly at 24 h after irradiation; the time at which the maximum histological damage was seen. With the beginning of recovery the enzyme tended to decrease and gradually approached control values.
