Summary Cardiac catheterization, initially conducted byForssmann in 1929, has become a qualified clinical method. A fine rubber catheter is introduced into the antecubital vein and mechanically reaches the right heart chambers; auricular and ventricular, as well as the pulmonary artery. In some exceptional cases the left auricle and ventricle likewise lend themselves to exploration.

Zusammenfassung Bei Tauben erzeugt intravenös gegebenes Alloxan bekanntlich Läsionen, die denen der Eingeweidegicht ähneln. Chemische und mikroskopische Untersuchungen zeigten eine große Menge von Uraten auf Perikardium, Peritoneum und Pleura. Die große Zunahme der Harnsäure im Blute, die von anderen Autoren kolorimetrisch festgestellt wurde, wird durch die Urikasemethode bestätigt. In der vorliegenden Mitteilung wird weiterhin über ein der Gelenkgicht ähnliches Bild bei alloxanbehandelten Tauben berichtet. Verschiedene Tierarten mit einem «ureotelic-proteic metabolism» zeigen nach Alloxan weder eine nennenswerte Harnsäurezunahme im Blut noch eine Gicht der Eingeweide oder der Gelenke.     

Über ein Chromoplastin aus reifenden Tomaten

Summary (1) By precipitation with ammonium sulfate, streptomycin, or calcium salts, we obtained from the pulp of tomatoes a substance containing carotinoids. The behaviour of this substance was analogous to that of chloroplst-substance and to that of animal cytoplasmatic nucleoproteins. Like these it contains proteins, lipids, and very probably nucleic acids. We regard this substance as achromoplastine.(2) Experiments with slices of green tomatoes show that the changing over of the chlorophyll content into the carotinoid content is inhibited by the presence of streptomycin.(3) Streptomycin inhibits the formation of chlorophyll in etiolated separated cabbage leafs, just as this drug inhibits the formation of chlorophyll in growing seeds.(4) The development of anthocyanides is not influenced by streptomycin.

Summary The fatty acids from dehydrated castor oil, mainly consisting of 9,11- and 9,12-linoleic acid, show in biological tests vitamin effects similar to those of the so-called essential fatty acids.     

Die Wirkung des Toluidinblaus und der Thrombokinase auf den Vorgang der Thrombininaktivierung

Summary The disappearance of thrombin—formed in the blood, or added to serum-follows a manomolecular reaction-type. Heparin increases the reaction-velocity of this thrombin-inactivating process.Our investigation established that toluidine blue or kinase, which, according to the literature, bind heparin, strongly reduce the speed of thrombin-inactivation too. Therefore the heparin-binding capacity of these substances is also manifested in the decrease of thrombin-inactivation.     

Un curare d'une Erythrine africaine

Summary An alcaloid C₁₆H₁₉NO₃ has been isolated fromErythrina tholloniana; the iodohydrate of this erythroidine has a melting point of 225°C and 239°C for its chlorhydrate. It has a powerful curare-like action on the frog or on its isolated sciatic-sartorius preparation; at a concentration of less than 1/1,000,000, a complete neuromuscular block is produced: the electrical stimulation of the motor nerve does not produce any contraction, but the muscle reacts by an end-plate potential having the same characteristics (shape, duration, possibility of summation) as the electrical waves produced in the same preparation curarized by ordinary curare or by quaternary ammonium derivatives. Decurarization by veratrine 1/200,000 is accompanied by the same electrical reactions as those which have been described in preparations treated by curare.On mammals, the alcaloid has little curariform activity; on the isolated phrenic-diaphragm preparation of the rat, incomplete block was produced at a concentration of 1/5000.

Zusammenfassung Es wurde gezeigt, daß die Injektion von Eigenurin wirksam ist gegen gewisse Viruskrankheiten. Es wurde auch festgestellt, daß dieselbe Behandlung desensibilisiert und gewisse anaphylaktische Störungen behebt.
