A crystalline,toxic, peptide metabolite ofTrichoderma spp. isolated from soil

Summary Isolates ofTrichoderma spp. from pasture soils of Nova Scotia produce at least 7 toxic peptides, probably related to alamethicin, some of which inhibit the growth of cellulase producing rumen bacteria. One of the peptides has been obtained in crystalline form and crystal data on this material is reported.     

Spontaneous miniature potentials in primary afferent fibres

Summary Intracellular recording from primary afferent fibres of the isolated frog spinal cord revealed the existence of spontaneous synaptic activity, related probably to the firing of presynaptic inhibitory fibres.     

Cell proliferation in the rat pituitary gland: A mechanism of control in prolactin cells

Summary We investigated the relationship between prolactin content and DNA replication in the anterior pituitary gland. Thymidine incorporation in pregnant rats is significantly lower than in virgin controls. This is accompanied by a decreased activity of DNA polymerase. Sulpiride administration to pregnant rats enhances thymidine incorporation to levels similar to virgin controls. The results indicate a negative feedback between prolactin content and DNA synthesis in the rat anterior pituitary gland.We are grateful to Prof. Carlos J. Semen copper in normal and infertile subjects

Summary Concentration of copper in seminal plasma was found to be less than that of normal in cases of oligospermia and azoospermia. It was more in oligoasthenospermia and asthenospermia when compared with that normal. Chances of initiation of sperm motility by copper is discussed alongwith the inhibitory role it plays.Acknowledgment. Authors are thankful to Dr. A. R. N. Permeability of fresh and stored human erythrocytes to glycerol and its acylated derivatives

Summary The effect of copper ions on the permeation of glycerol and its mono-, di-, and triacetate derivatives was studied in fresh and stored erythrocytes. Permeability was unchanged with storage. Acylated glycerols permeate the cells mainly by non-facilitated mechanism, as their transport is almost unaffected by copper ions.Portions of this work were included in the graduate thesis of Dr. Yaeger in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the M. Measurement of urinary steroid production rates using stable-isotopes and GC-MS

Summary The urinary production rate of pregnenolone has been determined for a male subject using 7,7-d₂-pregnenolone as an isotopic tracer.To whom correspondence should be addressed.     

A new simple assay for total blood lipids by refractometry

Summary A fast simple method for assay of total blood lipids has been devised by precipitating blood proteins with methanol and extracting lipids into diethyl ether. The change in refractive index of the methanol-ether due to dissolved lipids is measured in a refractometer.     

Contribution of germ-line cells to formation of the nurse chamber in egg follicles of nonpaedogenetic gall midges (Diptera,Cecidomyiidae)

Summary One of the nuclei present in the syncytial nurse chamber in nonpaedogenetic gall midges contains lamellae characteristic only of the germ-line cells. This finding indicates that the nurse chamber in bisexually reproducing gall midges, as in the case of paedogenetic species, derives from both germ-line and somatic cells.This investigation was supported in part under Contract DPKBN/52/76-II.1.3.10. with the Polish Academy of Sciences.     

Spatial distribution of the adaptation field of the surround response mechanism in type X cat retinal ganglion cells

Summary The surround response mechanism in on-center X-cells in cat retina was found to be bimodally distributed and weak or nonexistent in the receptive field middle. DNA synthesis in the pituitary gland of the rat: Effect of sulpiride and clomiphene

Summary Sulpiride administration to rats releases prolactin and increases DNA replication in the anterior pituitary gland. Clomiphene prevents the stimulation of DNA synthesis produced by sulpiride, but does not affect prolactin release from the gland. These findings suggest that the intracellular prolactin content of the anterior pituitary gland plays a role in the regulation of DNA synthesis through a mechanism mediated by oestrogens.This work was supported by PLAMIRH 99.178.1.78, by the Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas and by the Comisión Nacional de Energía Atómica (Argentina).
