Polymeric collagen isolated from squid (Loligo peallii) connective tissue

Résumé On a isolé du collagène naturel et polymère du tissu du manteau du calmarLoligo peallii par la méthode de Nishihara, les fibres présentant au microscope électronique une périodicité de 680 Å. Le collagène a une composition typique d'amino acides et contient l'hydrate de carbone dans une proportion restreinte; principalement sous forme de glucose et de galactose.     

Evidence for opiate receptors on pituicytes

A hypothalamo-neurohypophyseal enkephalinergic pathway has been described and the pars nervosa of the rat pituitary contains enkephalin-like material which may coexist in vasopressin and oxytocin terminals. At the level of the pars nervosa itself, stereospecific opiate receptors with properties very similar to those of brain receptors have been described, and opiates have been shown to inhibit the release of both vasopressin and oxytocin. The location of the opiate receptors involved has been presumed to be pre-terminal on the neurosecretory fibres. Using an autoradiographic technique to visualize opiate receptors, however, we now report that destruction of the neurosecretory fibres following pituitary stalk section does not result in a significant change in the neural lobe opiate receptor population. This suggests that the opiate receptors within the neural lobe may be present on pituicytes rather than on neurosecretory fibres.     

Age des halos pléochroïques de la granodiorite de Lausitz

Summary By a quantitative study of pleochroic haloes in biotite, the haloe age of the Lausitz granodiorite, in comparison with the granite age of the Elba Isle, was estimated to 280±150 M.Y. The granodiorite is either caledonian or hercynian.

Population structure, differential bias and genomic control in a large-scale, case-control association study

The main problems in drawing causal inferences from epidemiological case-control studies are confounding by unmeasured extraneous factors, selection bias and differential misclassification of exposure. In genetics the first of these, in the form of population structure, has dominated recent debate. Population structure explained part of the significant +11.2% inflation of test statistics we observed in an analysis of 6,322 nonsynonymous SNPs in 816 cases of type 1 diabetes and 877 population-based controls from Great Britain. The remainder of the inflation resulted from differential bias in genotype scoring between case and control DNA samples, which originated from two laboratories, causing false-positive associations. To avoid excluding SNPs and losing valuable information, we extended the genomic control method by applying a variable downweighting to each SNP.     

Chemical communication: chirality in elephant pheromones

Musth in male elephants is an annual period of heightened sexual activity and aggression that is linked to physical, sexual and social maturation. It is mediated by the release of chemical signals such as the pheromone frontalin, which exists in two chiral forms (molecular mirror images, or enantiomers). Here we show that enantiomers of frontalin are released by Asian elephants in a specific ratio that depends on the animal's age and stage of musth, and that different responses are elicited in male and female conspecifics when the ratio alters. This precise control of communication by molecular chirality offers insight into societal interactions in elephants, and may be useful in implementing new conservation protocols.     

Mesure des âges géologiques par les halos pléochroïques

Summary In this preliminary work, the possibility of dating crystalline rocks by pleochroic haloes has been studied.Halo-microphotometry has been combined with measurement of the alpha-activity of the inclusions by the photographic method.Standard thin sections of well dated granites have been used for calibration purposes. The reciprocity law is shown to be valid within the limit of error. The resolving power of this method depends essentially on the age ratio. Tertiary and primary rocks are easily separated.
