Effect of carbenoxolone on phosphodiesterase and prostaglandin synthetase activities.

Carbenoxolone inhibited in vitro cAMP and cGMP phosphodiesterases in a concentration-dependent and noncompetitive manner. Prostaglandin synthetase activity of rabbit kidney medulla was slightly stimulated by carbenoxolone 0.1--0.5 mM, but inhibited by higher concentrations.

New distribution records for the Querétero dusky rattlesnake Crotalus aquilus (Viperidae), with comments on morphology and habitat use

We provide the 1st documented accounts of the Mexican endemic rattlesnake Crotalus aquilus from the state of México. The new records extend the known distribution of the species into a region where it may be sympatric with the superficially similar C. triseriatus . Because these taxa have previously been subject to some taxonomic confusion, we performed a preliminary morphological comparison using individuals of both species obtained from proximal localities. Our analyses support the supposition that these taxa are morphologically distinct. The new localities for C. aquilus are situated in high valleys that have been extensively modified by human settlement and agriculture.

Global Optimization of Polynomials over Real Algebraic Sets

Let f, g_1, ···, g_s be polynomials in R[X_1, ···, X_n]. Based on topological properties of generalized critical values, the authors propose a method to compute the global in?mum f~? of f over an arbitrary given real algebraic set V = {x ∈ R~n| g_1(x) = 0, ···, g_s(x) = 0}, where V is not required to be compact or smooth. The authors also generalize this method to solve the problem of optimizing f over a basic closed semi-algebraic set S = {x ∈ R~n| g_1(x) ≥ 0, ···, g_s(x) ≥ 0}.

The trachea receives excitatory cholinergic innervation from the vagus nerve and the stellate ganglion. Inhibitory adrenergic fibres have the same sources. Those in the vagus nerve probably derive from high vagosympathetic anastomoses. Nonadrenergic inhibitory fibres have a preganglionic vagal supply.
