Isolation and amino acid compositions of geographutoxin I and II from the marine snail Conus geographus

The peptide toxins having inhibitory effects on the contractile response of the mouse diaphragm to direct stimulation, geographutoxin I and II, have been isolated from Conus geographus, and their amino acid compositions have been determined.     

Neutral proteases in the guinea-pig lymphocytes

Summary Partial purification of neutral proteolytic enzymes in guinea-pig lymphocytes yielded 2 enzymes. Both enzymes were heat-labile and inhibited by thiol reagents. The molecular weights were more than 200,000 and 150,000–200,000, and optimal pH around 9 and 8, respectively.We thank Prof. Hideo Hayashi and Yoshimasa Morino, Kumamoto University, for valuable discussions. Substance P-like immunoreactive fibers in the frog taste organs

In the frog tongue, substance P(SP)-like immunoreactive fibers were consistently present in each fungiform papilla, which contained the gustatory apparatus. Numerous SP-like immunoreactive fibers were usually distributed in the periphery of the gustatory disc and formed a varicose meshwork among the ciliated cells encircling the gustatory disc. SP-like immunoreactive fibers were rarely evident inside the gustatory disc. The role of SP-containing fibers in the frog taste organ was discussed.     

The signature of the first stars in atomic hydrogen at redshift 20

Dark and baryonic matter moved at different velocities in the early Universe, which strongly suppressed star formation in some regions. This was estimated to imprint a large-scale fluctuation signal of about two millikelvin in the 21-centimetre spectral line of atomic hydrogen associated with stars at a redshift of 20, although this estimate ignored the critical contribution of gas heating due to X-rays and major enhancements of the suppression. A large velocity difference reduces the abundance of haloes and requires the first stars to form in haloes of about a million solar masses, substantially greater than previously expected. Here we report a simulation of the distribution of the first stars at redshift 20 (cosmic age of around 180 million years), incorporating all these ingredients within a 400-megaparsec box. We find that the 21-centimetre hydrogen signature of these stars is an enhanced (ten millikelvin) fluctuation signal on the hundred-megaparsec scale, characterized by a flat power spectrum with prominent baryon acoustic oscillations. The required sensitivity to see this signal is achievable with an integration time of a thousand hours with an instrument like the Murchison Wide-field Array or the Low Frequency Array but designed to operate in the range of 50-100 megahertz.     

Lipopurealins,novel bromotyrosine derivatives with long chain acyl groups,from the marine spongePsammaplysilla purea

Summary Lipopurealin-A,-B and-C have been isolated from the Okinawan marine spongePsammaplysilla purea. They are inhibitors of Na, K-ATPase, and the structures have been elucidated on the basis of spectral data. They are bromotyrosine derived structures with saturated long chain acyl parts.Physiologically active marine natural products from Porifera X. Pain relief by xenograft of subarachnoid microencapsulated bovine chromaffin cells in cancer patients

The bovine chromaffin cells (BCC) implanted into the subarachnoid space can release analgesic substances such as opioid peptides and ealeeholamines. Clinical trials have provided the evidence that the implantation of polyvinylchloride ( PVC) hollow fiber encapsulated BCC by surgery can relief the pain in cancer patients. In the present study, BCC were encapsulated in alginate-polylysine-alginate (APA) mieroencapsules which protect the grafting of xenogeneic cells from host immune system anil allow BCC to function effectively without using immunosuppression agents. The microencapsulated BCCs (5 X 106~—8 X 106) were transplanted into the subarachnoid space I^._s of 17 patients who suffered from chronic cancer pain and had to have long-term administration of analgesics. The pain scores and morphine intake tesl showed that microencapsulated BCC graft totally stopped the chronic pain in three of the patients over a period of 200 days and in the other three over a period of 100 days. The resulls suggesl thai APA microencapsulated BCC xenotransplantation could be a novel alternative approach to managing pain of cancer patients.     

Blood flow rate in jejunal ischemia-reperfusion injury

We examined changes in the blood flow rate in the course of jejunal ischemic injury using a laser Doppler flowmeter. For this purpose, we designed a sensor holding system, which involved the fixation of the sensor to the jejunum and allowed their movements to be synthronized. When the jejunum was reperfused after 10 min of ischemia, the blood flow rate markedly increased and then gradually decreased to the initial level. A 30-min period of ischemia produced the slowest recovery of the blood flow rate. This system could be useful for monitoring the blood flow rate in different anatomical regions.
