A population of ventral neural tube cells has recently been shown to migrate out of the hind brain neural tube via the vagus
nerve and contribute to the developing gastrointestinal tract. Since liver is also innervated by the vagus nerve, we sought
to determine if these cells also migrate into the liver. Ventral neural tube cells in the caudal hindbrain of chick embryos
were tagged with a replication-deficient retroviral vector containing the LacZ gene on embryonic day 2. Embryos were processed
for detection of labeled cells on embryonic day 5 and 11. Labeled cells were seen in the liver on both days and identified
as hepatocytes. Previously, it was believed that all hepatocytes develop from the gut endoderm. Results of the present study
show an additional source for the formation of liver cells.

Proinsulin C-peptide is known to bind specifically to cell membranes and to exert intracellular effects, but whether it is
internalized in target cells is unknown. In this study, using confocal microscopy and immunostained or rhodamine-labeled peptide,
we show that C-peptide is internalized and localized to the cytosol of Swiss 3T3 and HEK-293 cells. In addition, transport
into nuclei was found using the labeled peptide. The internalization was followed at 37°C for up to 1 h, and was reduced at
4°C and after preincubation with pertussis toxin. Hence, it is concluded to occur via an energy-dependent, pertussis toxin-sensitive
mechanism and without detectable degradation within the experimental time course. Surface plasmon resonance measurements demonstrated
binding of HEK-293 cell extract components to C-peptide, and subsequent elution of bound material revealed the components
to be intracellular proteins. The identification of C-peptide cellular internalization, intracellular binding proteins, absence
of rapid subsequent C-peptide degradation and apparent nuclear internalization support a maintained activity similar to that
of an intracrine peptide hormone. Hence, the data suggest the possibility of one further C-peptide site of action.

Cells build plasma membrane protrusions supported by parallel bundles of F-actin to enable a wide variety of biological functions,
ranging from motility to host defense. Filopodia, microvilli and stereocilia are three such protrusions that have been the
focus of intense biological and biophysical investigation in recent years. While it is evident that actin dynamics play a
significant role in the formation of these organelles, members of the myosin superfamily have also been implicated as key
players in the maintenance of protrusion architecture and function. Based on a simple analysis of the physical forces that
control protrusion formation and morphology, as well as our review of available data, we propose that myosins play two general
roles within these structures: (1) as cargo transporters to move critical regulatory components toward distal tips and (2)

Summary Corticotropin1–24 and [Gly1]corticotropin1–18 amide increased the fluorescence of 1-anilinonaphthalene-8-sulfonate which bound to the bovine adrenocortical membranes. Summary After injection of microspheres into both renal arteries of rats, an irreversible shock syndrome develops, resulting in death within 4–12 h. Ligation of both renal pedicles after injection of microspheres prevents the shock. Summary In 2 independent samples of low-birth-weight infants the proportion of females and homozygotes for a series of polymorphic systems was higher in light-for-dates than in preterm babies. The observation seems to give support to the hypothesis that homozygosity for normal polymorphisms may decrease in general intrauterine growth rate. Since it is known that survival rate is strongly related to birth weight, a correlation between growth retardation and homozygosity may have a major role in the maintenance of such polimorphisms.We thank Prof. L. Summary Stroma-free hemoglobin solutions present some drawbacks when used as blood substitutes, essentially because the hemoprotein has a low vascular retention, due to its small hydrodynamic volume.
