Microtubules with more than 13 protofilaments in the dividing nuclei of ciliates

Microtubules are largely composed of proteins called tubulins. These are stacked in linear arrays called protofilaments (p). Most microtubules have precisely 13p (ref. 1). The 'incomplete' B and C microtubules (10 or 11p) of cilia, flagella, basal bodies and centrioles are widespread exceptions. Very few examples of 'complete' microtubules with more, or less, than 13p have been found. However, the 'ciliate cell' includes a larger number of highly differentiated types of microtubule arrays than most other cell types. The present study was undertaken to ascertain whether there is variation in p number in two ciliates. In both, all complete cytoplasmic microtubules examined have 13p but microtubules with 13-16p are present in the nucleoplasm of dividing nuclei. These features are probably common to ciliates in general because the free-living hymenostone Paramecium tetraurelia and the parasitic heterotrich Nycotherus ovalis are not closely related in terms of taxonomic criteria or life-style.

Summary Heterotransplantation of the rat hepatoma of Zajdela into golden hamsters, mice and Chinese hamsters has induced virtually no change in the neoplasm. The host tissues have shown, however, a 1% increase in their own mitoses, which is attributed to growth stimulation by the tumor.     

Mass fragmentographic determination of cholecalciferol and 25-hydroxycholecalciferol in human serum

Summary The serum extracts were purified by column-, thin layer- and high pressure liquid chromatography. Deuterated cholecalciferol and deuterated 25-hydroxycholecalciferol were used as internal standards. The quantitative analysis was performed using GC-mass fragmentography technique of TMS-ethers.

Zusammenfassung Die exterozeptive Aufsetzreaktion der Hinterpfote der Katze nach verschiedenartigen Rückenmarksverletzungen ist untersucht worden. Nach Entfernung des Hinterstranges bleibt dieselbe erhalten, sie verschwindet nach oberflächlicher Verletzung im medialen dorsalen Teil des Seitenstranges. Es wird angenommen, dass eine in diesem Rückenmarksteil verlaufende exterozeptive Bahn der afferente Schenkel der Aufsetzreaktion ist.     

The effect of sulfhydryl reagents upon the activity of 40S ribosomal subunits

Summary p-Chloromercuribenzoate inhibited the poly (U)-dependent binding of Phe-tRNA to the 40S ribosomal subunit but displayed no inhibitory effect on the binding of poly (U) to the ribosome. Other sulfhydryl reagents tested, likeN-ethylmaleimide and iodoacetamide, did not affect the binding of Phe-tRNA to the small ribosomal subunit.
