Summary L-Phe-L-Tyr and L-Lys-L-Phe-L-Tyr showed a marked inhibitory effect (not chloride-dependent) on the excitability of an identifiable giant neurone (the TAN) of Achatina fulica Férussac, while L-Tyr-L-phe, L-Tyr-L-Tyr, L-Phe-L-Phe, L-Lys-L-Phe and Z-L-Phe-L-Tyr (Z-: carbobenzoxy) had no effect.Authors wish to thank Dr Atsuo Inoue of Daiichi Pharmaceutical Co. for his helpful advice, and Miss Hiroko Tamura for her technical assistance.     

Circadian change of sweating rate measured locally by the resistance hygrometry method in man.

There existed circadian change in the sweating rate locally measured from the anterior of the left thigh: the sweating rate showed a remarkable decline during the period 2.00--5.00 h, while at other times throughout the day it generally remained high. This reduction seemed to be independent of sleep or sleeplessness.

Zusammenfassung Es wird eine cinfache und schnelle Methode zur Bestimmung der Zellkonzentration in kohlenwasserstoffhaltigen Kulturflüssigkeiten beschrieben. Zur Abtrennung der Kohlenwasserstoffe wird die Probe nach Zusatz von Teepol zentrifugiert, danach die Zellkonzentration durch Trübungsmessung bestimmt.     

Histochemical demonstration of primary catecholamines in pacinian corpuscles of the cat

Résumé En utilisant la méthode de fluorescence de Falck, on constate que les corpuscules de Vater-Pacini montrent la fluorescence caractéristique des catécholamines primaires. L'intensité de la fluorescence est plus marquée dans le corps central des corpuscules nerveuses, moins dans les lamelles et absente dans la fibre nerveuse.     

Effect of nicotine on the transmembrane potential and contractility of isolated rat atria

Zusammenfassung Die Wirkungen von Nikotin auf die Kontraktilität und die Membranpotentiale des Rattenatriums wurden untersucht. Nikotin (5 × 10^–4 M) erhöhte gleichzeitig die entwickelte Spannung sowie die Dauer und Fläche des Aktionspotentials. Ein möglicher Zusammenhang dieser Änderungen mit der erhöhten Kontraktilität wird diskutiert.

Summary The report concerns a new method for continuous observation of foetal heart frequency during delivery. The apparatus uses ultrasonic energy according to the Doppler-effect. The equipment is compact, reliable and relatively inexpensive. The ultrasonic energy used, is far below the intensities required to produce harmful effects in biological structures.

Zusammenfassung Nachweis, dass die pars distalis der Hypophyse des LeopardfroschesRana pipiens eine Melanozyten stimulierende Substanz enthält, die in vitro abgesondert wird. Wässerige Extrakte aus Hypothalamus und Kortex des Frosches hemmen die Ausscheidung der die Melanozyten stimulierenden Substanz in vitro.
