Respiratory function of blood and relative weight of certain organs in two species of shrew: Crocidura russula and Suncus etruscus (Soricidae mammals)]

A high oxygen capacity combined with a low oxygen affinity and a large Bohr effect achieve a high oxygen transport capacity in small shrews. The high metabolic rate (Suncus estruscus: 100 to 350 ml O2/kg. min) can be explained by the combination of the favorable blood parameters with a high relative heart weight (1,2% of body weight) and heart frequencies of 1,000 to 1,350 per minute.     

Immunocytology of alpha-endorphin positive hypothalamic fibers of Carassius auratus L. and Cyprinus carpio L.]

An immunocytological study of the basal hypothalamus of Carassius auratus and Cyprinus carpio with an alpha-endorphin antiserum shows the different nerve processes belonging probably to the immunoreactive cells of the lateral part of the N.L.T. According to their pathways, two main fibre tracts have been distinguished: many fluorescent fibres converge towards the pituitary gland into which they enter, other fibres run caudally through the tuber towards the nucleus tuberis inferior (Baumgarten and Braak) where they could not be followed further.     

Prostacyclin-like activity of endothelium and subendothelium — important for atherosclerosis?

Summary Morphological control of Moncada's bioassay for prostacyclin (PG I₂) activity measurement shows that the activity depends not only on endothelium, but in important amounts on subendothelial tissue too. Therefore, it can be concluded that platelet thrombus formation after endothelial cell injury does not depend only on the PG I₂-producing ability of the tissue.     

Origin and course of an afferent component of the facial nerve within the central nervous system

Summary The mesencephalic nucleus of trigeminal gives rise to an afferent component of the facial nerve. This nucleus contains large unipolar afferent cell bodies which give rise to an axon which courses caudally through the brainstem and exits via the facial nerve to terminate distal to the stylomastoid foramen.This work was supported by National Aeronautics and Space Administration Grant No. NAS 9-15213.
