The v-myc oncogene is sufficient to induce growth transformation of chick neuroretina cells

A number of studies have shown that full transformation of non-established rodent fibroblasts can be efficiently achieved in vitro by the concerted action of two oncogenes belonging to different complementation groups. Extension of the two-genes carcinogenesis model to other differentiated cell types, presumably endowed with different controls of growth, is desirable for a better understanding of questions such as the host cell selectivity of oncogene action. A recent report claimed that cooperation between two oncogenes, v-myc and v-mil, is required to achieve transformation of chicken embryo neuroretina cells, which are characterized by a limited growth capacity in monolayer culture. Here we present evidence that the v-myc oncogene alone is sufficient to induce growth transformation of glial and neuronal precursor cell types from chick neuroretina. We also report that induction of transformation by v-myc is accompanied by faithful preservation of some of the differentiated functions of the chick cells.     

Nuclear pores. can they expand and contract to regulate nucleocytoplasmic exchange?

Summary Recent evidence has revived the idea that translocation of macromolecules between nucleus and cytoplasm may be regulated via expansion and contraction of the entire diameter of the nuclear pore complex. Loss of cytosolic serine hydroxymethyltransferase in a formate mutant ofNeurospora crassa

Summary In the wild type ofNeurospora crassa serine hydroxymethyltransferase occurs in the cytosol and mitochondria. The formate mutant (FGSC 9) lacks the cytosolic activity but has increased levels of isocitrate lyase and glyoxylate aminotransferase. Glycine is derived from glyoxylate in the mutant.     

Field testing ofcis-11-tetradecenal as attractant or synergist in tortricinae

Summary Field studies have shown thatcis-11-tetradecenal is an effective attractant for maleChoristoneura conflictana, a pest of aspen. These studies also indicate thatcis-11-tetradecenal is probably a secondary component in the sex pheromone systems ofChoristoneura rosaceana andChoristoneura fumiferana.Christoneura conflictana (Wlk.),C. rosaceana (Harris) andC. fumiferana (Clemens) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae: Tortricinae).Contribution No. IPRI 296.     

Plasma steroid and protein hormone concentrations in patients with benign prostatic hypertrophy and in normal men.

Serum levels of testosterone, FSH, LH and prolactin were measured by RIA in patients with BPH (benign prostatic hypertrophy) and in control men. The testosterone concentrations in the BPH group were significantly lower than that of the control group. Serum concentrations of FSH, LH, prolactin and estradiol, did not differ significantly in the 2 groups.     

Effects of lithium chloride on peripheral acetylcholine release and brain acetylcholine levels in the guinea-pig

Summary Lithium chloride administered acutely or chronically to guinea-pigs had no effect on brain level of acetylcholine or on peripheral release of acetylcholine from longitudinal muscle of the ileum. The results suggest differences between in vitro and in vivo action of lithium.To whom correspondence should be addressed.
