Growth,development, feeding preference,and food consumption and utilization by tobacco hornworm on tobacco mosaic virus-infected and non-infected tobacco leaves

Summary Plant disease may cause a variety of changes in plants which influence their suitability to insect herbivores. The reported physiological changes in tobacco due to infection by tobacco mosaic virus have the potential to influence the feeding, growth and behavior of the tobacco hornworm,Manduca sexta. However, feeding on foliage of systematically infected plants had no statistically significant effects on development time, mean pupal weight or the amount of foliage consumed by 4th instars. Although an initial preference was exhibited by larvae for healthy leaves after about 72 h no differences were observed. Induction of calcium currents by the expression of the alpha 1-subunit of the dihydropyridine receptor from skeletal muscle

The dihydropyridine (DHP) receptor purified from skeletal muscle comprises five protein subunits (alpha 1, alpha 2, beta, gamma and delta) and produces Ca2+ currents that are blocked by DHPs. Cloning of the alpha 1- and alpha 2-subunits, the former affinity-labelled by DHP, has shown that the alpha 1-subunit is expressed in skeletal muscle alone, whereas the alpha 2- and delta- subunits are also expressed in other tissues. Although the transient expression of the alpha 1-subunit in myoblasts from dysgenic mice (but not in oocytes) has been demonstrated, the use of these expression systems to determine the function of the alpha 1- subunit is complicated by the presence of endogenous Ca2+ currents, which may reflect the constitutive expression of proteins similar to the alpha 2-, beta-, gamma- and/or delta-subunits. We therefore selected a cell line which has no Ca2+ currents or alpha 2- subunit, and probably no delta-subunit for stable transformation with complementary DNA of the alpha 1- subunit. The transformed cells express DHP-sensitive, voltage-gated Ca2+ channels, indicating that the minimum structure of these channels is at most an alpha 1 beta gamma complex and possibly an alpha 1- subunit alone.

Physiological importance of omega-3/omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids in man. An overview of still unresolved and controversial questions

The 'essentiality' of (omega-6) and (omega-3) fatty acids in mammals is well known. Nevertheless, some important points remain unclear concerning their implication in physiology. After a short discussion about the definition of essential fatty acids deficiency, this brief overview deals with some of these points, pointing out some of the unresolved questions. Different subjects are approached concerning the (omega-6) and (omega-3) fatty acids metabolism: desaturases, eicosanoids, production, as well as some of their metabolic effects on cell membranes, intestinal function, glucose and lipid metabolism, haemorheology.

Forecasting using high‐frequency data: a comparison of asymmetric financial duration models

The first purpose of this paper is to assess the short‐run forecasting capabilities of two competing financial duration models. The forecast performance of the Autoregressive Conditional Multinomial–Autoregressive Conditional Duration (ACM‐ACD) model is better than the Asymmetric Autoregressive Conditional Duration (AACD) model. However, the ACM‐ACD model is more complex in terms of the computational setting and is more sensitive to starting values. The second purpose is to examine the effects of market microstructure on the forecasting performance of the two models. The results indicate that the forecast performance of the models generally decreases as the liquidity of the stock increases, with the exception of the most liquid stocks. Furthermore, a simple filter of the raw data improves the performance of both models. Finally, the results suggest that both models capture the characteristics of the micro data very well with a minimum sample length of 20 days. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Mutations in IHH, encoding Indian hedgehog, cause brachydactyly type A-1.

Brachydactyly type A-1 (BDA-1; MIM 112500) is characterized by shortening or missing of the middle phalanges (Fig. 1a). It was first identified by Farabee in 1903 (ref. 2), is the first recorded example of a human anomaly with Mendelian autosomal-dominant inheritance and, as such, is cited in most genetic and biological textbooks. Here we show that mutations in IHH, which encodes Indian hedgehog, cause BDA-1. We have identified three heterozygous missense mutations in the region encoding the amino-terminal signaling domain in all affected members of three large, unrelated families. The three mutant amino acids, which are conserved across all vertebrates and invertebrates studied so far, are predicted to be adjacent on the surface of IHH.
