Ecosystem respiration is the biotic conversion of organic carbon to carbon dioxide by all of the organisms in an ecosystem, including both consumers and primary producers. Respiration exhibits an exponential temperature dependence at the subcellular and individual levels, but at the ecosystem level respiration can be modified by many variables including community abundance and biomass, which vary substantially among ecosystems. Despite its importance for predicting the responses of the biosphere to climate change, it is as yet unknown whether the temperature dependence of ecosystem respiration varies systematically between aquatic and terrestrial environments. Here we use the largest database of respiratory measurements yet compiled to show that the sensitivity of ecosystem respiration to seasonal changes in temperature is remarkably similar for diverse environments encompassing lakes, rivers, estuaries, the open ocean and forested and non-forested terrestrial ecosystems, with an average activation energy similar to that of the respiratory complex (approximately 0.65?electronvolts (eV)). By contrast, annual ecosystem respiration shows a substantially greater temperature dependence across aquatic (approximately 0.65?eV) versus terrestrial ecosystems (approximately 0.32?eV) that span broad geographic gradients in temperature. Using a model derived from metabolic theory, these findings can be reconciled by similarities in the biochemical kinetics of metabolism at the subcellular level, and fundamental differences in the importance of other variables besides temperature—such as primary productivity and allochthonous carbon inputs—on the structure of aquatic and terrestrial biota at the community level. 相似文献

In 1997, the rediscovery of Sus bucculentus in Laos was announced by Groves et al.--this wild pig species had gone unrecorded since first being described in 1892. Although the identification of the new specimen was based initially on morphology, the authors also used a 7% sequence divergence from the common Eurasian pig S. scrofa (based on their analysis of 327 base pairs of the gene encoding mitochondrial 12S ribosomal RNA) as support for the species status of S. bucculentus. Concerned about the large divergence reported for a relatively conserved gene, and the absence of the sequence in any public database, we analysed an additional tissue sample from the specimen and found only 0.6% divergence from S. scrofa. Our more extensive analysis places the sample within the S. scrofa clade, calling into question the species status of S. bucculentus and demonstrating the need for both phylogenetic and morphological evidence in defining species. 相似文献

Components of the 86Rb+-influx in HeLa cells were investigated in Joklik minimal essential medium, or in Earle's balanced salt solution with and without medium amino acids. The presence of amino acids led to the stimulation of the ouabain sensitive 86Rb+-uptake and inhibition of the diuretic-sensitive and residual 86Rb+-fluxes. The subventricular zone (SVZ), which lines the lateral walls of the lateral ventricle, persists as a neurogenic zone into adulthood and functions as the largest site of neurogenesis in the adult brain. In recent years, with the acceptance of the concept of postembryonic mammalian neurogenesis, neurogenesis in the adult SVZ has been an area of active research. With the rapid accumulation of new information on the SVZ, some of which is contradictory, summarizing existing knowledge on the SVZ and outlining future research directions in this area become important. In this review, we will cover recent molecular and cellular investigations that characterize the SVZ niche, SVZ neurogenesis, and SVZ cell migration within the adult brain. 相似文献

Telomeres in most immortal cells are maintained by the enzyme telomerase, allowing cells to divide indefinitely. Some telomerase-negative tumors and immortal cell lines maintain long heterogeneous telomeres by the ALT (alternative lengthening of telomeres) mechanism; such tumors are expected to be resistant to anti-telomerase drug therapies. Occasionally telomerase-negative Saccharomyces cerevisiae mutants survive, and 10% of them (type II survivors) have unstable telomeres. As in human ALT+ cells, short telomeres in yeast type II survivors lengthen abruptly; in yeast, this is dependent on the recombination proteins Rad52p and Rad50p. In human cells, ALT involves copying of sequence from a donor to a recipient telomere. We have characterized for the first time a class of complex telomere mutations seen only in ALT+ cells. The mutant telomeres are defined by the replacement of the progenitor telomere at a discrete point (fusion point) with a different telomere repeat array. Among 19 characterized fusion points, one occurred within the first six repeats of the telomere, indicating that these recombination-like events can occur anywhere within the telomere. One mutant telomere may have been involved in a secondary recombination-like mutation event, suggesting that these mutations are sporadic but ongoing in ALT+ cells. We also identified simple intra-allelic mutations at high frequency, which evidently contribute to telomere instability in ALT+ cells. 相似文献
