Trends of karyological evolution in Pelobatoid frogs

Summary The Pelobatids have a basal karyotype of 26 chromosomes, with 6 pairs of large and 7 of small chromosomes (6+7). From this karyotype, shown byLeptobrachium, Pelobates andScaphiopus, those ofMegophrys andSpea (5+8) may be derived, as well as that ofL. pelodytoides, with only 24 chromosomes.Pelodytes has 24 chromosomes and a karyotype 7+5 differing from that of typical Pelobatids under several respects.Research supported by a contribution from the Italian C. Immune sera recognize on erythrocytes Plasmodium falciparum antigen composed of repeated amino acid sequences

Protective immune responses against the asexual stages of the human malaria parasite, Plasmodium falciparum, are most probably directed against exposed antigenic determinants on the surface of the free merozoite or the infected red blood cell, and therefore antigens in these locations are candidates for testing as components of a defined molecular vaccine. To facilitate the search for such antigens, we recently developed a method for the expression of P. falciparum proteins in Escherichia coli as fused polypeptides. Many clones producing antigens were detected by screening with immune human sera. We show here that antibodies against the fused polypeptide expressed by one such clone react with a P. falciparum protein that is synthesized late in schizogony and is later present on the surface of the ring-infected erythrocyte. The protein is composed of repeating subunits of 8, 4 and 3 amino acids and is present in all isolates of P. falciparum examined.     

Regulation of ammonia uptake inAspergillus nidulans

Summary The ammonia uptake inA. nidulans was found to be linear for about 20 min, and was proportional up to 1.5 mg/ml dry cell density. The transport of ammonia does not involve energy. Normal and biotin deficientA. nidulans showed an identical K_m-values of 10.26×10^–5 M ammonia for uptake. The uptake of ammonium ion has been shown to be regulated by the intracellular concentration of ammonia.Acknowledgment. Attempt to induce, in the rat, a hepatitis of cirrhotic origin, using amino steroids: holaphyllaminol or amino 3-beta hydroxy-20-beta pregnene-5]

Holaphyllaminol, or Amino-3 beta-Hydroxy-20-beta Pregnene-5, was administered by gastric tube to male Wistar rats at dose of 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg/24 hr respectively, during 10, 20, 40 and 80 days. This substance provokes hepatic lesions beginning at the periportal region, the characteristics of which are a cholestasis, a canalar proliferation and a fibrosis. The interest of these alterations lies in the fact that they present the same features as certain human chronic hepatitis; their progression, a function of the dose of the toxin and the duration of treatment, may make possible to realisation of a model of experimental chronic hepatitis.

The different types of collagen synthesized by embryonic Mouse tooth germs were analysed using an immunohistiological method. The tooth germs were shown to synthesize at least three genetically distinct collagen types: I, III and IV.     

Proliferation and cell loss of human leukemic cell subpopulations in liquid culture

A kinetic study was performed on leukemic blasts from patients with acute myeloid leukemia, separated into 2 subpopulations by a specific density gradient. The growth curve and the [3H]-thymidine uptake were simultaneously analyzed. While cumulative nucleotide uptake fitted with the growth kinetics in the low-density fraction, such a concordance was not found in the high-density subpopulation. That indicated the occurrence of simultaneous growth and loss in the high density fraction, which could not be evaluated by a simple numerical determination.     

Diurnal fluctuation of sensitivity to noradrenaline in the rat and thyroid adrenal interaction

Summary Diurnal fluctuation of the sensitivity to noradrenaline, which disappeared after thyroidectomy, was restored after novotyrol treatment. Dexamethasone treatment did not result in the restoration of the diurnal fluctuation of noradrenaline calorigenic action in adrenalectomized animals.
