Role of livestock and black-tailed jackrabbits in changing abundance of Kochia americana

Exclosure data show further decline from 1957 to 1973, then some increase between 1970 and 1973 and 1976 and 1981. Utah sheep numbers, at maximum from 1925 to 1940 and declining steadily to the 1970s, may have induced the long-term changes. Black-tailed jackrabbits ( Lepus californicus ), could not have induced vegetation decline, but could have added to livestock pressure and abetted the trend. In 1972, rabbits near a cyclic high were indirectly estimated to completely utilize K. americana in Curlew Valley, northwestern Utah. In 1976–1977 at rabbit low, direct measurements show 4%–18% of plants browsed by late summer, about 30%–50% of herbage removed from browsed plants. The latter rose to 45%–82% by end of winter. Late-summer percent browsed may have risen slightly (11%–21%) in 1980–1981 at next rabbit high. Increase in K. americana density from 1973 to 1976, then a slight decrease from 1976 to 1980, suggests fluctuating K. americana abundance induced by rabbit browsing, superimposed on long-term K. americana decline and recovery.     

Chromosome 4q DNA rearrangements associated with facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy.

Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) is an autosomal dominant neuromuscular disorder which maps to chromosome 4qter, distal to the D4S139 locus. The cosmid clone 13E, isolated in a search for homeobox genes, was subsequently mapped to 4q35, also distal to D4S139. A subclone, p13E-11, detects in normal individuals a polymorphic EcoRI fragment usually larger than 28 kilobases (kb). Surprisingly, using the same probe we detected de novo DNA rearrangements, characterized by shorter EcoRI fragments (14-28 kb), in 5 out of 6 new FSHD cases. In 10 Dutch families analysed, a specific shorter fragment between 14-28 kb cosegregates with FSHD. Both observations indicate that FSHD is caused by independent de novo DNA rearrangements in the EcoRI fragment detected by p13E-11.     

Molecular characterization of genome of a novel human T-cell leukaemia virus

A novel human retrovirus (HTLV-II) was previously found associated with a T-cell variant of hairy-cell leukaemia. Molecular cloning demonstrates that the complete provirus genome is 8.8 kilobase pairs in size and is transmissible to uninfected cells. Two types of infectious deleted provirus were also characterized. The sequences of HTLV-II are distinct from those of HTLV-I.     

The measurement of transketolase activity in heart preparations

Zusammenfassung Methodenvergleich zur Transketolase-Analyse in Rattenherzen. Die neue Methode benützt als Substrat Hydroxypyruvat und Erythrose-4-Phosphat und bestimmt das Verhältnis der Transketolaseaktivität an der Bildung von Fructose-6-Phosphat. Der Wechsel der Myocard-Transketolaseaktivität während Hypertrophie wird beschrieben.
