Possible involvement of calmodulin in apical constriction of neuroepithelial cells and elevation of neural folds in the chick

Summary Chlorpromazine and trifluoperazine HCl, antipsychotic drugs known to bind to calmodulin, reversibly inhibited elevation of neural folds by interfering with the contractile activity of apical microfilament bundles in developing chick neuroepithelial cells.We wish to thank C. A direct plasma testosterone radioimmunoassay

Résumé On a développé und méthode simple pour déteminer sans chromatographie en colonne le testostérone du plasma. La purification a été faite par préextraction avec l'hexane. Un antisérum contre le testostérone a été produit chez des lapins inoculés avec des conjugués de testostérone-3-oxine et d'albumine de sérum bovin.     

Complementation used to clone a human homologue of the fission yeast cell cycle control gene cdc2

A human homologue of the cdc2 gene has been cloned by expressing a human cDNA library in fission yeast and selecting for clones that can complement a mutant of cdc2. The predicted protein sequence of the human homologue is very similar to that of the yeast cdc2 gene. These data indicate that elements of the mechanism by which the cell cycle is controlled are likely to be conserved between yeast and humans.

Résumé Les mutants au locusm de l'Arabidopsis ne réussissent pas à former de chloroplastes normaux dans certaines conditions et montrent des activités plus hautes en synthèse de pyrimidines que le témoin. La nutrition aseptique par 6-azauracile, inhibiteur spécifique de cette voie métabolique, restaure la différenciatin de structure lamellaire dans la plupart de ces organites, mais aux concentrations élevées, apparaissent des chloroplastes morphologiquement déviants, quoique de fonction efficace.     

Dynamics of the amphibian middle ear.

Using laser speckle interferometry, we show that the directional information of acoustic signals is encoded in the motion of eardrum. Moreover, the frequency sensitivity of the auditory system is determined by the mechanical properties of the middle ear, which acts like a damped resonator.     

High K+-induced release of somatostatin from the cortical preparation of rat brain.

Release of endogenous somatostatin (SRIF) from the rat cerebral cortical slices incubated in Krebs-bicarbonate buffer was increased from the basal rate of 3.4 +/- 0.6% of the total SRIF content in 15 min at [K+]o = 5.6 mM, to 13.1 +/- 1.6% upon raising the [K+]o to 56.6 mM. The high-K+ evoked SRIF release was absent when Ca++ in the medium was replaced by Mn++. The isolated synaptosomes from rat cerebral cortex contain 13.2 +/- 3.1 ng SRIF/mg protein compared to 0.33 +/- 0.01 ng/mg protein in the cortical tissue as a whole, suggesting that nerve terminals are the main source of the peptide released upon membrane depolarization.
