Summary Uptake of¹⁴C-cholesterol or³H-cholesterol labelled liposomes, stimulation of¹⁴C-glucose oxidation, as well as ultrastructural and autoradiographical experiments have shown that liposomes are phagocytized by mouse peritoneal macrophages. Further results have shown that degradation of liposomes was not complete 2 h after uptake.

The use of cyclophosphamide as an enhancer of the vaccine against foot-and-mouth disease

The immunization of biungulate animals with killed foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) requires periodic vaccinations due to a low vaccine immunogenicity. Therefore, FMDV antigens need to be combined with adjuvants such as aluminum hydroxide, saponin or oil emulsions. Animal handling for periodic inoculations, and the repeated doses of vaccines that have to be administered increase the commercialization costs. Moreover, the use of adjuvants may induce adverse effects.In the present work we show that it is possible to increase the life span of neutralizing antibodies in serum when a single dose of cyclophosphamide (Cy) is administered four days before vaccination with aluminum hydroxidesaponin FMDV vaccine.     

Inhibition of glucose transport in human erythrocytes by 2,3-dioxoindole (Isatin)

10 mM isatin (2,3-dioxoindole) inhibited glucose influx into human erythrocytes by over 30%. The inhibition is of the competitive type, where the affinity constant (K_t) was increased from 5.71 (control) to 11.11 mM in the presence of isatin with no change in V_max (130 nmol/min/ml packed cells). The observed inhibition of sugar transport by isatin was not mediated through membrane–SH groups accessible to iodoacetate, iodoacetamide, DTNB, DNP or sodium arsenite. Isatin inhibited sugar transport in the presence of 2 mM harmaline, an alkaloid inhibitor of Na⁺, K⁺–ATP_ase activity. The inhibition was non additive which suggests that these two compounds interact with the same or a similar site on the erythrocyte membrane.     

Binding of ferritin-lectin conjugates to C-type virus in intact cells.

Ferritin-Ricin II and Ferritin-Concanavalin A bound to budding as well as mature C-type viral particles. No differencies in binding between the viral coat and adjacent plasma membrane were detected with either lectin conjugate. Aggregation of viral particles by lectin conjugates was observed, and linking of virus to the plasma membrane resulted in phagocytosis of viral particles.
