Stimulation of pyruvate carboxylation by gastric secretagogues

Summary Pyruvate carboxylation was stimulated by 2 gastric secretagogues, histamine and dibutyryl cyclic AMP, and by butyrate. Thiocyanate, an inhibitor of acid secretion, produced a slight decrease. Avidin significantly reduced acid secretion and this effect was overcome by biotin and oxalacetate. The results suggest that carboxylation of pyruvate is one of the reactions controlling oxidative metabolism and acid secretion in toad gastric mucosa.This investigation was supported by Consejo de Desarrollo Científico y Humanístico de la Universidad del Zulia, and by CONICIT Grant S1-0455.

The turnover of F-actin-bound ADP in vivo.

A procedure for estimating the rate of turnover of F-actin-bound ADP in vivo is described. A turnover rate of 0.88 h-1 was determined for mouse muscle F-actin. The validity of the method when used to estimate the turnover rate of F-actin per se is discussed in relation to the possible exchange of F-actin-bound ADP.     

Skeletal muscle capillary densities during reactive hyperemia

Summary Reactive hyperemia was induced in hindlimbs of rats by occlusion of the femoral artery. Using fluorescein dye as a peripheral vascular marker, we observed that there was an increase in the number of flowing capillaries supplying the muscle fibres following release of the occlusion. The results indicate that the number of flowing capillaries is not dependent on the duration of occlusion (2–10 min).     

Brain chopping: A new method for the rapid removal of newborn rat brain

Summary A new multi-bladed air-driven guillotine is described. This device removes newborn rat heads and slices them into several thin wafers, which facilitates freezing and permits easy regional dissection.Supp. in part by U. S. Public Health Service Grant. AA-01391.     

An analysis of distal dominance in the regenerating limb of the axolotl

Résumé La régenération d'une patte (Ambystoma mexicanum) n'est pas empêchée par la présence d'une greffe d'une patte sur la surface d'amputation d'un membre hôte. La greffe d'une patte cependant articule avec le régénérat hôte à un niveau homologue le long de l'axe du membre.
