The South Pacific convergence zone (SPCZ) is the Southern Hemisphere's most expansive and persistent rain band, extending from the equatorial western Pacific Ocean southeastward towards French Polynesia. Owing to its strong rainfall gradient, a small displacement in the position of the SPCZ causes drastic changes to hydroclimatic conditions and the frequency of extreme weather events--such as droughts, floods and tropical cyclones--experienced by vulnerable island countries in the region. The SPCZ position varies from its climatological mean location with the El Ni?o/Southern Oscillation (ENSO), moving a few degrees northward during moderate El Ni?o events and southward during La Ni?a events. During strong El Ni?o events, however, the SPCZ undergoes an extreme swing--by up to ten degrees of latitude toward the Equator--and collapses to a more zonally oriented structure with commensurately severe weather impacts. Understanding changes in the characteristics of the SPCZ in a changing climate is therefore of broad scientific and socioeconomic interest. Here we present climate modelling evidence for a near doubling in the occurrences of zonal SPCZ events between the periods 1891-1990 and 1991-2090 in response to greenhouse warming, even in the absence of a consensus on how ENSO will change. We estimate the increase in zonal SPCZ events from an aggregation of the climate models in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phases 3 and 5 (CMIP3 and CMIP5) multi-model database that are able to simulate such events. The change is caused by a projected enhanced equatorial warming in the Pacific and may lead to more frequent occurrences of extreme events across the Pacific island nations most affected by zonal SPCZ events.  相似文献

Cardiac hypertrophy is initiated as an adaptive response to sustained overload but progresses pathologically as heart failure ensues. Here we report that genetic loss of APJ, a G-protein-coupled receptor, confers resistance to chronic pressure overload by markedly reducing myocardial hypertrophy and heart failure. In contrast, mice lacking apelin (the endogenous APJ ligand) remain sensitive, suggesting an apelin-independent function of APJ. Freshly isolated APJ-null cardiomyocytes exhibit an attenuated response to stretch, indicating that APJ is a mechanosensor. Activation of APJ by stretch increases cardiomyocyte cell size and induces molecular markers of hypertrophy. Whereas apelin stimulates APJ to activate Gαi and elicits a protective response, stretch signals in an APJ-dependent, G-protein-independent fashion to induce hypertrophy. Stretch-mediated hypertrophy is prevented by knockdown of β-arrestins or by pharmacological doses of apelin acting through Gαi. Taken together, our data indicate that APJ is a bifunctional receptor for both mechanical stretch and the endogenous peptide apelin. By sensing the balance between these stimuli, APJ occupies a pivotal point linking sustained overload to cardiomyocyte hypertrophy.  相似文献

Localized ecological systems are known to shift abruptly and irreversibly from one state to another when they are forced across critical thresholds. Here we review evidence that the global ecosystem as a whole can react in the same way and is approaching a planetary-scale critical transition as a result of human influence. The plausibility of a planetary-scale 'tipping point' highlights the need to improve biological forecasting by detecting early warning signs of critical transitions on global as well as local scales, and by detecting feedbacks that promote such transitions. It is also necessary to address root causes of how humans are forcing biological changes.  相似文献

Human chromosome 12 contains more than 1,400 coding genes and 487 loci that have been directly implicated in human disease. The q arm of chromosome 12 contains one of the largest blocks of linkage disequilibrium found in the human genome. Here we present the finished sequence of human chromosome 12, which has been finished to high quality and spans approximately 132 megabases, representing approximately 4.5% of the human genome. Alignment of the human chromosome 12 sequence across vertebrates reveals the origin of individual segments in chicken, and a unique history of rearrangement through rodent and primate lineages. The rate of base substitutions in recent evolutionary history shows an overall slowing in hominids compared with primates and rodents.  相似文献

The nearest neighbor interchange (nni) metric is a distance measure providing a quantitative measure of dissimilarity between two unrooted binary trees with labeled leaves. The metric has a transparent definition in terms of a simple transformation of binary trees, but its use in nontrivial problems is usually prevented by the absence of a computationally efficient algorithm. Since recent attempts to discover such an algorithm continue to be unsuccessful, we address the complementary problem of designing an approximation to the nni metric. Such an approximation should be well-defined, efficient to compute, comprehensible to users, relevant to applications, and a close fit to the nni metric; the challenge, of course, is to compromise these objectives in such a way that the final design is acceptable to users with practical and theoretical orientations. We describe an approximation algorithm that appears to satisfy adequately these objectives. The algorithm requires O(n) space to compute dissimilarity between binary trees withn labeled leaves; it requires O(n logn) time for rooted trees and O(n 2 logn) time for unrooted trees. To help the user interpret the dissimilarity measures based on this algorithm, we describe empirical distributions of dissimilarities between pairs of randomly selected trees for both rooted and unrooted cases.The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada partially supported this work with Grant A-4142.  相似文献

Pairing of human X and Y chromosomes during meiosis initiates within the so-called pairing region at the telomeres or the chromosome short arms. Using DNA from the Y chromosome we found sequence homology in the pairing region of the human X and Y chromosomes. This DNA is telomeric, contains repetitive sequences and is highly polymorphic in the population. The polymorphism has allowed family studies which show the sequences are not inherited as though linked to the sex chromosomes. This 'pseudoautosomal' pattern of inheritance points to an obligate recombination in the pairing region of the sex chromosomes during male meiosis.  相似文献

The isolation of the human T-cell leukaemia (lymphotropic) virus type III (HTLV-III or lymphadenopathy-associated virus) from cells of many patients with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) presented the first evidence that the virus was the aetiological agent of the disease. Subsequent seroepidemiological studies have shown the presence of HTLV-III-specific antibodies in the serum of most patients with AIDS and AIDS-related complex (ARC), and in the serum of many individuals at risk for AIDS. Despite these extensive studies, there are no reports of protective effects of HTLV-III antibodies. In contrast, neutralizing antibodies specific for HTLV-I and -II have been identified previously. Therefore, we investigated whether HTLV-III-exposed individuals possess antibody activities capable of inhibiting viral infection. Here, we report that natural antibodies capable of neutralizing HTLV-III infection of H9 cells were detected in most adults AIDS and ARC patients but in no normal healthy heterosexual controls. Geometric mean antibody titres in ARC patients were double those in AIDS patients, and were even higher in two antibody-positive healthy homosexuals. This suggests that virus neutralizing antibodies may exert an in vivo protective effect. The presence of these antibodies indicates an immunological response to HTLV-III which potentially may be manipulated for therapeutic advantage. The methodology used here will be useful in monitoring future vaccine approaches.  相似文献

Summary Water uptake by bean seeds (Phaseolus vulgaris) over 4 h in 4 adjacent Faraday cages and in 4 similar, but mumetal-lined, Faraday cages disclosed comparable interactional patterns among both cage types. This indicates a role of dynamic, or fluctuating, biomagnetic fields. An inverted relationship over time between the 2 cage types is probably due to geomagnetic attenuation.I wish to thank Carol S.
