Population dynamics of the gall inducer Eriogallococcus isaias (Hemiptera: Coccoidea: Eriococcidae) on Pseudobombax grandiflorum (Malvaceae)

Eriogallococcus isaias Hodgson and Magalhães is a Neotropical species of gall-inducing scale insect (Coccoidea: Eriococcidae), whose phenological synchrony with its host plant, Pseudobombax grandiflorum, is fundamental to the maintenance of its population. Furthermore, E. isaias is unusual among gall-inducing Eriococcidae because its galls are not sexually dimorphic and are induced by the second-instar nymphs. We studied the life cycles of the host plant and the galling insect, and followed the development of the insects and the structure of the gall. The results showed that gall induction is synchronous with leaf flushing, and that the galls and leaves mature concomitantly. Males have a 36–48-day life cycle within the gall, whereas females have a 75–100-day life cycle.     

Distribution and ecology of freshwater Ostracoda (Crustacea) collected from springs of Nevada, Idaho, and Oregon: a preliminary study

Fourteen freshwater ostracod species collected from 24 springs in Nevada, Idaho, and Oregon between 1991 and 1994 were classified. Their ecology, based on major water parameters (i.e., temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, conductivity), and biogeographical distribution in North America were studied. Among these 14 species, 9 ( Ilyocypris bradyi , I. gibba , Darwinula stevensoni , Candona candida , Heterocypris incongruens , Herpetocypris reptans , H. chevreuxi , Prionocypris canadensis , P. longiforma ) are new records for Nevadas ostracod fauna, while 3 ( H. reptans , P. canadensis , and Cypria turneri ) are new species for Oregon. H. reptans , P. canadensis , and Heterocypris salina are also recorded as new for the ostracod literature of Idaho. Scottia pseudobrowniana , collected from Nevada, is a new ostracod species for the United States. The occurrence of 5 Holarctic species in the northern Great Basin area may suggest a possible historical relationship with the European ostracod fauna.     

Variation in the bark call of the red squirrel ( Tamiasciurus hudsonicus )

Calls of the red squirrel ( Tamiasciurus hudsonicus; n = 122) were recorded in wild populations from 15 localities in Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, and Washington. Computer-generated audiospectrograms of 20- or 30-second samples from a calling bout of each individual were analyzed. Eighteen bark types (distinct forms of the bark call) were identified plus a 19th category that included rarely used, longer bark calls. The frequency of use of each bark type within the sample was recorded for each squirrel. Differences in frequency of use of the various bark types were found among subspecies, within subspecies, and within populations; additionally, the southern subspecies utilized a reduced number of bark types. The large number of different bark types and the variation in bark type usage within populations suggest the potential for communication of such information as individual identification, behavioral states, or gender identification.     

Evidence for a neuronal release of isotopically labelled γ-amino-n-butyric acid (GABA) from the rat dorsal medulla in vivo

Summary High potassium and electrical stimulation consistently increase efflux of labelled GABA from the in vivo superfused rat dorsal medulla in a calcium-dependent fashion. The depolarizing alkaloid, veratridine, also evokes a large increase in efflux of labelled GABA. Do prostaglandins mediate the somatostatin preventive effect on gastric lesion?

The inhibition of endogenous prostaglandin synthesis by indomethacin treatment blocks the somatostatin preventive effect on the gastric lesions induced in a stress model and has no preventive effect on an intragastric distension model.
