The constitutions of glauconic,glaucanic and byssochlamic acids

Zusammenfassung Die Struktur der Pilzstoffwechselprodukte Glaucon- und Glaucansäure (C₁₈H₂₀O₇ bzw. C₁₈H₂₀O₆) ausPenicill. purp. wird in der Hauptsache durch das Studium der Reduktionsprodukte ermittelt. Diese Verbindungen enthalten zwei fünfgliedrige Säureanhydrid-Gruppierungen, die mit einem eigenartigen doppelt ungesättigten neungliedrigen Ringsystem gekuppelt sind, das unter verschiedenen Bedingungen in das Indangerüst übergeführt werden kann.Wie schon früher beschrieben, wird Glauconsäure leicht pyrolytisch zu Diäthylacrolein und Glauconin abgebaut. Die Formel des Glauconins, die durch Spektralmessungen und Synthese bewiesen wurde, ist für die Konstitutionsaufklärung der Glauconsäure in gewisser Hinsicht irreführend, da das Kohlenstoffskelett des Glauconins nicht schon in der Glauconsäure vorliegt, sondern erst durch eine Umlagerung unter Bildung neuer C-C-Bindungen bei der Spaltung der Glauconsäure entsteht.Die Biogenese der beiden Säuren wird diskutiert; sie scheint auf der Verknüpfung zweier Fragmente mit neun Kohlenstoffatomen und identischem Gerüst zu beruhen. Die Annahme einer andersartigen Verknüpfung der beiden Fragmente führt zu einer möglichen Struktur für Byssochlamsäure, C₁₈H₂₀O₇. Die so abgeleitete Konstitution wird durch röntgenkristallographische Strukturbestimmung bestätigt.Byssochlamsäure, ausByssochlamys fulva, enthält ebenfalls ein neungliedriges, doppelt ungesättigtes Ringsystem sowie zwei fünfgliedrige Säureanhydrid-Gruppierungen und zeigt die Tendenz, Indanderivate zu bilden. Ihr chemisches Verhalten wird anhand der durch Röntgenstrahlenkristallographie bestimmten Struktur diskutiert.     

Sympathetic vasodilation in the submaxillary gland and its enhancement after chronic parasympathetic denervation

Zusammenfassung Die «Nacherweiterung» der Gefässe, welche auf Reizung des sympathischen Nervs der Submaxillaris-Drüse in der Katze folgt, wird nicht durch Kallikrein oder Kinin ausgelöst, da sie nicht durch den hochwirksamen synthetischen Bradykinin-potenzierenden Faktors (BPF) beeinflusst wird. Eine neue Beobachtung zeigte, dass diese sympathische Gefässerweiterung bedeutend verstärkt wird, nachdem der parasympathische Nerv durchschnitten wurde und degeneriert ist.

Just before Nature: The purposes of science and the purposes of popularization in some english popular science journals of the 1860s

Popular science journalism flourished in the 1860s in England, with many new journals being projected. The time was ripe, Victorian men of science believed, for an 'organ of science' to provide a means of communication between specialties, and between men of science and the public. New formats were tried as new purposes emerged. Popular science journalism became less recreational and educational. Editorial commentary and reviewing the progress of science became more important. The analysis here emphasizes those aspects of popular science which have been identified by Frank Turner as 'public science' and by Thomas Gieryn as 'boundary-work'. the religious, intellectual, and utilitarian values claimed for science by editors and contributors in their tasks of persuading the public to support science and of distinguishing science from what they often called 'applied science' are discussed. These values are shown to vary among editors and, for the editors examined here, Shirley Hibberd, Henry Slack, James Samuelson, William Crookes, and Henry Lawson, to differ significantly from those of T. H. Huxley, John Tyndall, and Norman Lockyer, on whom much study of the popularization of science in the 1860s has focused.     

TRIM24 links a non-canonical histone signature to breast cancer

Recognition of modified histone species by distinct structural domains within 'reader' proteins plays a critical role in the regulation of gene expression. Readers that simultaneously recognize histones with multiple marks allow transduction of complex chromatin modification patterns into specific biological outcomes. Here we report that chromatin regulator tripartite motif-containing 24 (TRIM24) functions in humans as a reader of dual histone marks by means of tandem plant homeodomain (PHD) and bromodomain (Bromo) regions. The three-dimensional structure of the PHD-Bromo region of TRIM24 revealed a single functional unit for combinatorial recognition of unmodified H3K4 (that is, histone H3 unmodified at lysine 4, H3K4me0) and acetylated H3K23 (histone H3 acetylated at lysine 23, H3K23ac) within the same histone tail. TRIM24 binds chromatin and oestrogen receptor to activate oestrogen-dependent genes associated with cellular proliferation and tumour development. Aberrant expression of TRIM24 negatively correlates with survival of breast cancer patients. The PHD-Bromo of TRIM24 provides a structural rationale for chromatin activation through a non-canonical histone signature, establishing a new route by which chromatin readers may influence cancer pathogenesis.     

Common variants at TRAF3IP2 are associated with susceptibility to psoriatic arthritis and psoriasis

Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is an inflammatory joint disease that is distinct from other chronic arthritides and which is frequently accompanied by psoriasis vulgaris (PsV) and seronegativity for rheumatoid factor. We conducted a genome-wide association study in 609 German individuals with PsA (cases) and 990 controls with replication in 6 European cohorts including a total of 5,488 individuals. We replicated PsA associations at HLA-C and IL12B and identified a new association at TRAF3IP2 (rs13190932, P = 8.56 × 10?1?). TRAF3IP2 was also associated with PsV in a German cohort including 2,040 individuals (rs13190932, P = 1.95 × 10?3). Sequencing of the exons of TRAF3IP2 identified a coding variant (p.Asp10Asn, rs33980500) as the most significantly associated SNP (P = 1.13 × 10?2?, odds ratio = 1.95). Functional assays showed reduced binding of this TRAF3IP2 variant to TRAF6, suggesting altered modulation of immunoregulatory signals through altered TRAF interactions as a new and shared pathway for PsA and PsV.     

Effect of dipyridamole and adenosine monophosphate on cell proliferation in the hemopoietic tissue of normal and gamma-irradiated mice.

Combined treatment with dipyridamole and adenosine monophosphate enhances cell proliferation in the hemopoietic tissue of normal and gamma-irradiated mice. This effect can be explained by the elevation of extracellular adenosine, and the receptor-mediated activation of the cell adenylate cyclase system.
