The subventricular zone: new molecular and cellular developments

The subventricular zone (SVZ), which lines the lateral walls of the lateral ventricle, persists as a neurogenic zone into adulthood and functions as the largest site of neurogenesis in the adult brain. In recent years, with the acceptance of the concept of postembryonic mammalian neurogenesis, neurogenesis in the adult SVZ has been an area of active research. With the rapid accumulation of new information on the SVZ, some of which is contradictory, summarizing existing knowledge on the SVZ and outlining future research directions in this area become important. In this review, we will cover recent molecular and cellular investigations that characterize the SVZ niche, SVZ neurogenesis, and SVZ cell migration within the adult brain.     

Changes with hypertension and maturation in the response of stomach fundus to acetylcholine

Summary The purpose of these experiments was to compare the contractile response to ACh of stomach fundal strips from hypertensive (SHR) and normotensive (WKY) rats during the development of hypertension. The results indicate that the reactivity to ACh is the same in fundal strips from young SHR and WKY rats; however, with maturation strips from WKY rats undergo a reduction in responsiveness which does not occur in the SHR. Therefore, strips from older SHR rats are more reactive to ACh than are those from age matched WKY rats.Acknowledgment. A light microscope study of fibre diameter and sarcomere length relationships in rigor skeletal muscles

Summary Correlation coefficients between fibre diameter and sarcomere length were significant in relaxed, unfixed muscles in rigor, indicating that fibres with large diameters had short sarcomeres and fibres with small diameters had long sarcomeres. No significant correlations were obtained in muscles from limbs that entered rigor in a folded or stretched position.
