The identification of ecdysterone (20-hydroxyecdysone) in 3 species of molluscs (Gastropoda: Pulmonata)

Summary Ecdysterone has been identified in the schistosomiasis vectorBiomphalaria glabrata Say and inHelix aspersa Müller as well as inLymmaea stagnalis L. by chromatography, bioassay, radioimmunoassay, derivatization and by mass spectroscopy. Analysis of the food, faeces and hepatopancreas suggest that the sterol is derived from the diet. The probable function of ecdysterone in relation to calcification of the shell is discussed in this paper.We wish to thank Professor P. Karlson and Dr J. Identification of an acyclic diterpene alcohol in the defense secretion of soldiers ofReticulitermes lucifugus

Summary The defense secretion of soldiers ofReticulitermes lucifugus has been shown to contain, predominantly, (R)-(–)-(E,E)-geranyllinalool together with germacrene A and -farnesene.This report covers part of a collaborative study with J.-L. Clément, Lab. d'Evolution, Université P. et M. Curie, Paris, to whom we are grateful for supplies of material and discussions. We also thank Dr O.T. High-performance reversed-phase liquid chromatography (HPLC) of favism-inducing factors inVicia faba L.

Summary A HPLC assay for L-Dopa, convicine, and vicine in broad-bean extracts has been developed. The distribution of these compounds in the different organs of the plant has been studied, especially in the seeds, where their presence may cause favism if the beans are used as food.Work supported by C.N.R. through Progetto Finalizzato Miglioramento delle produzioni vegetali per fini alimentari ed industriali mediante interventi genetici. Genetic polymorphisms and intrauterine development. Evidence of decreased heterozygosity in light-for-dates human newborn babies

Summary In 2 independent samples of low-birth-weight infants the proportion of females and homozygotes for a series of polymorphic systems was higher in light-for-dates than in preterm babies. The observation seems to give support to the hypothesis that homozygosity for normal polymorphisms may decrease in general intrauterine growth rate. Since it is known that survival rate is strongly related to birth weight, a correlation between growth retardation and homozygosity may have a major role in the maintenance of such polimorphisms.We thank Prof. L. Birefringence signals and tension development in single frog muscle fibres at short stimulus intervals

Summary The early large birefringence signal and mechanical activity were studied together in isolated single fibres of frog skeletal muscle with double stimulation at short stimulus intervals (2–60 msec) at room temperature and at 4–6°C. In all fibres tested, extra tension and additional birefringence signal in response to the second stimulus appeared simultaneously and suddenly upon increasing the stimulus interval. The shape of the stimulus-interval versus tension-development curve makes it highly improbable that subthreshold calcium release occurs at shorter stimulus intervals; therefore, tension development reliably reflects Ca-release in these experiments. In contrast to the report by Suarez-Kurtz and Parker, birefringence signal and calcium release are shown not to be dissociated by double stimulation. This result supports the hypothesis that the early large birefringence signal is an intrinsic indicator of calcium release from the sr during EC-coupling in skeletal muscle.     

Experimental desquamation of intestinal epithelium for in vivo studies of regeneration

Summary Complete removal of villous as well as upper-crypt epithelium was achieved in vivo by vibration of an intestinal segment using tetraphenylboron sodium (TPB) as a disassociation agent.Acknowledgments. Plasma growth hormone in the rabbit fetus. Relation to maturation of the liver and lung]

Day 25 after insemination is a date of peculiar importance in the maturation of several organs in the Rabbit fetus. From day 25 onward the fetal liver stores increasing amounts of glycogen and the lung stores increasing amounts of lecithins, concomitant with sudden rise in the activity of lung phosphatidic-acid phosphohydrolase. Earlier studies on decapitated fetuses established that glycogen storage in the liver is dependent on a dual hormonal control, comprising a pituitary hormone like growth hormone or prolactin (some placental hormones share the same activity) and corticosteroids (Jost, 1961). Since the variations in endogenous corticosteroids do not seem to herald these liver or lung changes (Mulay et al., 1973), a study was made of growth hormone. Plasma immunoreactive growth hormone--determined with a heterologous Rat system (Kervran et al., 1976)--increases eightfold between days 23 and 25. During the same time plasma prolactin does not change according to McNeily and Friesen, 1978, and to unpublished data obtained with Dr McNeilly. In preliminary assays, Rat growth hormone was seen to increase phosphorylase "a" activity in the lung of 18.5 day-old Rat fetuses, thus anticipating normal development. We suggest that growth hormone plays a role in initiating liver and lung maturation.     

Genetic control by the HLA region of the immune response to factor VIII in hemophilic patients]

In 10 sibships of haemophilic A patients, every one including 1 haemophilic brother with an antibody to factor VIII and 1 haemophilic brother without antibody, pattern of HLA segregation was analysed. All sibships were HLA haploidentical or different and not HLA identical. This fact suggested a linkage between the major histocompatibility complex and an "Ir" gene to factor VIII.     

Field bioassay of male Douglas-fir beetle compound 3-methylcyclohex-3-en-1-one

Summary Synthetic 3-methylcyclohex-3-en-1-one, or 3,3-MCH, decreased by 77% the flight aggregation ofDendroctonus pseudotsugae (Scolytidae) to sticky traps containing attractant (frontalin, -pinene, and resin). However, windthrown trees were protected by 3,3-MCH much less than is known to occur with the isomer 3,2-MCH.This research was supported in part by NSF grants BMS 72-02522 and DEB 77-11361 and the O.S.U.
