Review of the fabrication and application of porous materials from silicon-rich industrial solid waste

Porous materials have promise as sound insulation, heat barrier, vibration attenuation, and catalysts. Most industrial solid wastes, such as tailings, coal gangue, and fly ash are rich in silicon. Additionally, a high silicon content waste is a potential raw material for the syn- thesis of silicon-based, multi-porous materials such as zeolites, mesoporous silica, glass-ceramics, and geopolymer foams. Representative sil- icon-rich industrial solid wastes (SRISWs) are the focus of this mini review of the processing and application of porous silicon materials with respect to the physical and chemical properties of the SRISW. The transformation methods of preparing porous materials from SRISWs are summarized, and their research status in micro-, meso-, and macro-scale porous materials are described. Possible problems in the application of SRISWs and in the preparation of functional porous materials are analyzed, and their development prospects are discussed. This review should provide a typical reference for the recycling and use of industrial solid wastes to develop sustainable “green materials.”     

Inspection interval optimization for aircraft composite structures with dent and delamination damage

The optimization of inspection intervals for composite structures has been proposed,but only one damage type,dent damage,has been addressed so far.The present study focuses on the two main damage types of dent and delamination,and a model for optimizing the inspection interval of composite structures is proposed to minimize the total maintenance cost on the premise that the probability of structure failure will not exceed the acceptable level.In order to analyze the damage characteristics and the residual strength of the composite structure,the frequency,energy,size,and depth of the damage are studied,and the situation of missing detection during the inspection is considered.The structural residual strength and total maintenance cost are quantified corresponding to different inspection intervals.The proposed optimization method relieves the constraints in previous simulation methods,and is more consistent with the actual situation.Finally,the outer wing of aircraft is taken as an example,and with the historical cases and experimental data,the optimization method is verified.The optimal inspection interval is shorter than the actually implemented inspection interval,and the corresponding maintenance cost is reduced by 23.3%.The result shows the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed optimization method.     

Right prefrontal laterality of Chinese boys during a Chinese high conflict Stroop task measured by multi-channel near-infrared spectroscopy imaging

Some studies have shown that native Chinese speakers have different laterality in matched Stroop tasks from native English speakers. Recently, many imaging data, which show left laterality of English-matched Stroop interference, have been reported. And a few functional imaging studies have been conducted to investigate the phenomenon of the Chinese version of Stroop task. In this study, functional activity in the lateral prefrontal cortex of a group of normal Chinese boys with functional near-infrared imaging during a Stroop color-word task was measured to show different Stroop interferences in the prefrontal cortex. The results show obvious fluctuation of the cerebral blood volume in the right prefrontal cortex in all boys, which agrees with the finding of previous studies, that is, Chinese native boys have right laterality in their brain when the Chinese version of Stroop color-word task is applied.

Research on subsidence method aided by water injection and its engineering application for the north anchor of Taizhou Bridge

The north anchorage caisson of Taizhou Bridge encountered some difficulties during the sinking process for the large sidewall frictional resistances. To solve this problem, a new concept and method called subsidence method aided by water injection is proposed. Numeral analysis is adopted to simulate the effects of this method for the north anchor of Taizhou Bridge, which confirmed the feasibility and validity. Finally, the method is applied to the north anchor caisson during the caisson sinking procedure and helps the caisson sink and embed to the designed position smoothly.     

Structure and magnetic properties of Ni50Mn35In15 thin film

Thin film of Ni50Mn35In15 Heusler alloy was prepared on Mg O(001) substrate by epitaxial growth in an ultra-high vacuum(UHV) chamber by a Pulsed Laser Deposition(PLD) method. The epitaxial growth process was monitored by in situ reflection high energy electron diffraction(RHEED) and the structure of the film was checked by ex situ X-ray diffraction(XRD), which indicates that high quality Ni50Mn35In15 single crystal film with a face-centered-cubic(fcc) structure could be stabilized on Mg O(001). Magnetic property measurement was also conducted at various temperatures by using physical property measurement system(PPMS). A significant exchange bias was observed for Ni50Mn35In15 film,and the strength of the exchange bias field(HEB) increases with the decrease of temperature. Such a behavior can be ascribed to the fact that the interfacial spin interaction between ferromagnetic(FM) and antiferromagnetic(AFM) cluster is enhanced with the decrease of temperature.
